Capturing a Newborn Exoplanet

Astronomy has reached a new milestone with the imaging of a newborn exoplanet still nestled within the "leftover disk of gas and dust" from which it formed. Astrophysicist Alicia Weinberger notes that this image helps solve a missing piece of the "planet formation puzzle," offering a view of how a star and its surrounding disk influence one another.

This discovery confirms the scientific hypothesis that planets form within these "pancakes of light"—the protoplanetary disks surrounding young stars. By capturing a planet within a gap in this disk, researchers can now study its atmosphere and composition. With the sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists hope to eventually observe the entire formation process, moving closer to identifying planets similar in size to Earth that might be "hospitable to life."

The Lingering Aftermath: Wildfires and Water Quality

Finally, the episode addresses the long-term environmental impact of wildfires. A study published in Nature Communications and Environment reveals that water quality degradation can persist for nearly a decade after a fire. By analyzing four decades of data from hundreds of watersheds—areas of land that collect rain and snowmelt—researchers found that contaminants like carbon and phosphorus linger for up to five years, while nitrogen and sediment can persist for up to eight years.

While public water utilities typically filter these supplies, study author Ben Livna emphasizes that utility companies must be "extra aware of these contaminants" for an extended period following a fire. This data is crucial for building more "resilient" water systems, especially as human-caused climate change makes wildfires more frequent and intense. Understanding these long-term cycles is essential for ensuring that the two-thirds of the U.S. population reliant on these watersheds continues to have access to clean water.
