Mastering the Job Interview: Three Expert Strategies

In this episode of the All Ears English podcast, guest expert Kieran shares actionable advice for non-native English speakers preparing for high-stakes job interviews. Drawing from his experience coaching students—including a successful candidate for a competitive U.S. residency program—Kieran emphasizes that while language proficiency is important, success in an interview is often a result of rigorous preparation and strategic communication.

1. Prepare and Refine Your Answers

Kieran’s first piece of advice is to prepare answers for general interview questions beforehand, but he warns against writing them out immediately. Instead, he suggests, "Record yourself" first to capture your natural speaking style. Once you have a recording, you can transcribe and refine your vocabulary.

He stresses the importance of avoiding repetitive language—such as overusing the phrase "really good"—and suggests using a thesaurus to find more precise alternatives, such as "proficient." The goal is to move beyond simply stating you are "articulate" and instead "prove it" through your word choices, which serve as a sign of intelligence and capability to potential employers.

2. Confidence Takes Time

"Confidence takes its time," Kieran explains. He advises candidates to avoid the common mistake of rushing through their answers. By observing TED Talks, one can see that the most effective speakers pause intentionally. Kieran notes that "silence can be so powerful and mysterious," and using it effectively can build tension and command the listener’s attention.

He suggests that candidates should "breathe deeply" and use silent pauses to structure their responses. This approach is far more persuasive than relying on filler words like "um" or "like," which often signal nervousness. Remember, the interview belongs to you; taking your time demonstrates control and professionalism.

3. Practice with 'Bad Cop' Role-Plays

Perhaps the most unconventional tip Kieran offers is to simulate a difficult interview environment. He notes that not all interviewers will be friendly, and sometimes they may "cut you off" or act cold to test your composure. By practicing with a partner who plays a "bad cop," you can "toughen up" and prepare yourself mentally for high-pressure situations.

Kieran recounts instances where he challenges his students by saying, "I've noticed that your English isn't very good," or questioning their ability to fit into the work environment. While this can cause students to "crumble" initially, it is a vital drill to ensure they remain calm and articulate during the actual interview. As Kieran summarizes, "If you prepare yourself, it's 80 or 90 percent preparation," and this level of dedication is what ultimately differentiates successful candidates from the rest.
