Hi, welcome to Radio Headspace.
I'm Keisunga and it is Friday.
So happy Fri -yay! So the other day, an occurrence occurred with my daughter that got me to thinking about our thoughts and perceptions, specifically how our thoughts and perceptions play a role and how we experience our everyday lives.
My youngest daughter is 13 years old and she is a firecracker.
On this particular day, I came downstairs from my office to get a quick drink of water and then headed back up to get into my work.
I had kept my ear pods in and the music I was riding to was still going and so I really couldn't hear much of anything.
My daughter was in the kitchen making herself some lunch.
I kissed her on the cheek and hugged her quickly.
I got my water and then was on my way back upstairs.
All of a sudden, I heard her scream, Papa, aren't you even listening to me?
You don't even care about what I'm saying.
I was stunned. I abruptly took the pods out of my ears feeling totally confused.
When she saw me take the pods out of my ears, I saw a look of understanding and sorrow come across my daughter's face.
She immediately apologized for yelling because I also had a very stern look on my face.
I forgave her for yelling and she repeated her story to me.
Afterwards, I took the opportunity to have a conversation with her about our perceptions and thoughts.
As we go through our everyday lives, we are constantly interpreting each minute.
It's often on the subconscious level but then we have those events that impact us on a very conscious level.
And these events usually involve other people.
And if we're not careful and mindful, we can reflexively react inappropriately to these events.
And there's a common saying in the mindfulness world.
Our thoughts aren't facts.
Mindfulness teaches us to create space between our perceptions, interpretations and thoughts, and our reactions.
And this way we shift into that space of responding, which often entails a more appropriate behavior.
So there's nothing wrong with having these thoughts, but I invite you next time to just gently pause.
Maybe ask yourself, is this true?
Or what proof do I have of this?
It can really make a world of a difference in regards to stress management and just being happy overall.
To close out, I would love to do a mindfulness exercise with y 'all related to what I talked about today.
And no pressure at all to participate.
If it's comfortable for you, I'm going to ask you to close your eyes and imagining the following scenario in your mind's eye.
You are walking down the street, and on the other side of the street, walking in the opposite direction, you see somebody that you know.
You smile and you wave at them.
The person walks by without smiling or waving back at you.
Gently bring your attention to any thoughts that arise within you.
And now notice any emotions that are present.
And now noticing any bodily sensations.
And now asking yourself, is this true?
And with your next breath, gently open your eyes if they were closed.
And I ask you, how was this exercise for you?
I'm curious what kind of thoughts came up for you, and also the emotions and physical sensations that arose.
I love this exercise because it highlights what I was talking about previously about perceptions and thoughts.
But it also highlights how our thoughts can actually have a profound effect on our emotional and physical well -being.
It's really all connected.
And if you're looking for a way to step back from your thoughts and see things in a different way, there's a short changing perspective video in the Headspace app.
Thanks so much for listening this week.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and I look forward to catching up on Monday.
