📋 Summary

Introduction to IELTS Listening Part 3

In this episode of My IELTS Classroom, hosts Shelley and Nick delve into the complexities of IELTS Listening Part 3. Unlike the first two parts of the exam, which focus on everyday social interactions, Part 3 shifts to an academic context. This section typically features a conversation between two or three speakers, such as a tutor and students. The difficulty arises from the need to distinguish between multiple speakers, track shifting opinions, and identify nuances in feelings that are rarely expressed through literal statements like "I am happy."

The Four Examiner Tricks

Shelley, drawing on her professional experience as an exam writer, outlines four specific "tricks" used to challenge test-takers and separate high-level candidates from those who rely on superficial listening strategies.

1. The Rapid Fire Trick

This tactic targets students who only listen for keywords. The exam writer includes a keyword from each multiple-choice option within the audio. Because the student hears all the options mentioned, they cannot rely on keyword matching alone. Success requires listening for the context to determine the actual meaning, rather than just identifying isolated words.

2. The Synonym Trick

This is the inverse of the rapid fire trick. Here, the exam writer avoids using the exact words found in the answer choices, forcing students to identify the correct answer through paraphrasing and synonyms. It tests the student's ability to grasp the overall meaning of the conversation rather than performing simple word-to-word matching.

3. The 'Read the Question Properly' Trick

This strategy exploits students who may have strong listening skills but fail to pay attention to the specific constraints of the prompt. For example, a speaker might discuss both a "cat" and a "dog." If the question specifically asks about the cat, students often fall for a distractor related to the dog because they failed to anchor their listening to the specific subject mentioned in the question. Shelley emphasizes the importance of underlining keywords in the question during the 30-second preparation time.

4. The Multiple Speaker Trick

Exclusive to Part 3 due to the number of speakers, this trick involves distributing the information across the conversation. One speaker might offer a potential answer, while another refutes it or refines it. To find the correct answer, students must follow the chain of dialogue to the end rather than jumping to a conclusion based on the first speaker's suggestion.

Conclusion and Study Advice

Shelley and Nick conclude that the key to mastering this section is not merely practicing test after test, but analyzing errors. Students should utilize the provided tape scripts to understand why they were tricked. By identifying whether they fell for the "rapid fire" or "synonym" traps, students can shift their focus from listening for disjointed words to understanding the holistic context of the academic discussion. Developing this analytical mindset is essential for achieving a higher band score.

📖 Transcript

Hey everybody, this is Shelley.
I hope you are well.
Sadly, as I'm sure you can hear from my voice, I am not feeling very well this week, which means that Nick and I have not been able to record a new episode for you.
The only good news is that I keep testing negative for COVID.
So hopefully this is just a nasty cold and I will be back fit and well with a new episode next week.
But until then, that does not mean you get a week off.
