📋 Summary

The Tragic Murder of Jessie Blodgett: A Betrayal of Trust

Introduction: A Life Cut Short

Jessie Blodgett was a "miracle" child born to Buck and Joy Blodgett in 1994. Raised in Hartford, Wisconsin, she grew into a brilliant, compassionate young woman known for her musical talents—singing, piano, and violin—and her "strong moral compass." A fierce advocate for animal rights and social justice, Jessie aspired to become a choir director to mentor youth. Her life, however, was violently ended in July 2013, leaving a community and her family devastated.

The Discovery

After a successful opening weekend of the musical The Fiddler on the Roof, Jessie returned home after midnight on July 14. She mentioned to her mother, Joy, that she felt uncomfortable due to two older men at a party who were "hitting on" her and "crossing the line." The following morning, after her parents left for work, Jessie remained in her room. When Joy returned home at noon and found the house silent, she went upstairs to wake her daughter, only to discover Jessie deceased. Joy’s 911 call revealed her horror: "My daughter is blue... it looks like strangulation marks."

The Investigation and the Suspect

Police found no signs of forced entry, suggesting the killer was someone Jessie knew and trusted. Initial suspicions fell on a coworker who had harassed her and two men from the cast party. However, investigators soon pivoted to a different lead: an attempted murder of another young woman, Melissa Richards, in a nearby park. Melissa had been attacked by a man with a knife who later fled in a blue minivan. When detectives interviewed Daniel Bartelt—a close friend of Jessie’s who had been seen at her vigil—they noticed cuts on his hands. Under pressure, Daniel admitted to attacking Melissa, claiming he was "scared of life" after losing his job, but he denied involvement in Jessie’s death.

A Dark Obsession and the Truth

Despite Daniel’s denials, evidence pointed to a calculated, horrific crime. Daniel’s internet history revealed an obsession with "actual snuff videos" and content depicting the binding and strangulation of women. Investigators believe Daniel sought to "reenact that wretched pornographic snuff film" in real life. By targeting Jessie, a friend who "inherently trusted him," he gained easy access to her bedroom. He used a "bag full of supplies," including specialty tape and ligatures, to subdue her before strangling her. He even attempted to stage the scene to make it look like she was sleeping.

Legacy: Love Over Hate

Daniel Bartelt was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole, though he maintains his innocence. In a profound moment during the sentencing, Buck Blodgett addressed his daughter’s killer, stating, "Dan, I forgive you." To honor Jessie’s memory and her desire to "change the world," the Blodgett family founded the Love is Greater Than Hate project. This charity, dedicated to ending male-on-female violence, stands as a testament to their resilience and a commitment to transforming their grief into a force for good.
