📋 Summary

A Trio of Tricks: Outsmarting the Giants

In the whimsical world of the Circle Round podcast, the story "A Trio of Tricks" highlights the legendary cleverness of the Mouse Deer, a creature known for having the "body and face of a mouse and the legs and tail of a deer." Despite being one of the "smallest animals in the forest," the Mouse Deer survives by relying on her "smart" rather than her size, proving that wit can triumph over brute strength.

The Python and the Muddy Deception

The story begins in a misty forest where the Mouse Deer encounters a hungry Python. To avoid becoming the snake's breakfast, she fabricates a tale about an "important job" assigned to her by "Leopard, the King of the Forest." She claims she is guarding the King's "royal cake." Tempted by the promise of an "exquisite flavor," the Python is tricked into eating a "big, gooey pile" of mud instead. By the time the Python realizes, "This isn't cake. This is mud!," the Mouse Deer has already escaped, demonstrating her ability to manipulate her predators' greed.

The Hawk and the Stinging Drum

Later, as the fog lingers, the Mouse Deer is cornered by a hungry Hawk. Again, she uses her wits to escape, claiming she is guarding the King's "royal drum." She convinces the Hawk that the drum makes "the most glorious sounds." Eager to prove his musical talent, the Hawk strikes the object, only to discover it is actually a "wasp's nest." As the Hawk cries out, "The drum is stinging me!," the Mouse Deer vanishes once more, leaving the bird to fight off stinging insects while she enjoys her meal in peace.

The Tiger and the Coiled Belt

As night falls, the Mouse Deer faces her final challenge: the Tiger. Facing the "scissor-sharp teeth" of the predator, she once again invokes the King of the Forest, claiming to be guarding his "royal belt." She points to the sleeping Python, who is coiled in a circle, and convinces the Tiger that it is an extraordinary fashion accessory. When the Tiger wraps the "belt" around his waist, the Python wakes up and begins "tightening his scaly body around Tiger's furry belly."

Conclusion: The Power of Creative Thinking

The climax occurs when the three predators—Python, Hawk, and Tiger—convene and realize they have all been "duped" by the "conniving critter." Despite their collective desire for revenge, the Mouse Deer successfully evades them, leaving the fierce animals "dejected and hungry."

The podcast concludes by encouraging listeners to "think outside the box," just as the Mouse Deer does. By turning common obstacles into opportunities for creative problem-solving, the story teaches that even the smallest individuals can overcome significant threats through quick thinking and imagination. As the narrator notes, the big, fierce creatures ended up eating "humble pie," while the Mouse Deer lived to tell another tale.
