📋 Summary

The Dilemma of Jean and Claude

In this episode of Circle Round, titled "A Horse for Hire," we follow two hardworking but impoverished yam farmers, Jean and Claude. Living in a "tumble-down little cottage," the duo struggles to make ends meet as their fields produce "barely enough yams to feed them." When their own horse goes missing just before harvest time, they are forced to seek help from their wealthy, "stingy" neighbor, Pierre, who lives in a "mansion" and owns over a hundred horses.

The Unfair Agreement

Despite Pierre’s haughty attitude and mockery of their "shabby and pungent" clothing, Jean and Claude enter into a desperate agreement to rent one of his horses for 50 silver coins. They pay a "down payment" of two copper coins, their only remaining currency. However, upon returning home, they discover their own horse has returned. When they attempt to rescind the deal, the stubborn Pierre refuses to let it go, insisting that "the deal is off" only in the sense that they still owe him the full 50 silver coins, even without using his horse.

Marie’s Strategic Ruse

Hope arrives in the form of Marie, a traveling carpenter with a talent for fixing things—not just cottages, but also broken promises. Marie devises a clever plan to outwit the miserly Pierre. She accompanies the farmers to Pierre’s mansion, armed with a measuring tape, and insists on checking if his horse is "big enough" for the journey.

What follows is a masterful display of psychological warfare. Marie systematically lists an increasingly absurd list of passengers and cargo: Jean and Claude, their mothers, her own twins, two pigs, and "six sacks of yams" (which the farmers cheekily correct to seven). She even suggests the twins could hang onto the horse’s tail and the crops could be hung off the horse's neck.

The Triumph of Wit

Pierre, horrified by the prospect of his prized steed being treated like a "cargo ship," eventually snaps. He cries out, "There is no way my horse can carry such a load," and finally concedes, "The deal is off. I’ll give you your two copper coins, and never mind the 50 silver coins."

By playing into Pierre’s greed and pride, Marie successfully releases the farmers from their unfair debt. The story concludes with Jean and Claude finding success at the market due to the high quality of their yams, and Marie moving in to help renovate their home. This heartwarming tale serves as a reminder that sometimes, when faced with an unreasonable opponent, a little creative thinking and a "well-played" ruse can be the most effective way to restore justice.
