Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to EASY English Expressions.
You and me every day.
Come on. Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Good buddy welcome back to daily easy English expression thank you so much for listening and especially thank you to Dinah, Dinah is my new patron Dinah thank you so much for making these podcasts and my videos possible your're great.
Now thanks to Dinah, do we have a great expression today, so today we've got a word and the word is something something something so I'm gonna focus on pronunciation because everybody knows the word something right can you spell something let's spell it H -I -N -G, the pronunciation, something.
Let's do another word. Let's do, let's spell this word. Nothing, nothing, nothing.
Are you ready? N -O -T -H -I -N -G.
Very good. Let's do one more word. How about this word?
Gettin, Gettin, G -E -T -T -I -N -G.
Yes! We are so intelligent.
So, something, wow, we can actually say somethin, somethin.
Yes! That's a possible pronunciation.
It's called a glottal stop pronunciation.
and what's interesting is, something actually sounds like S -U -M -P.
But don't finish the P.
Go to the P and from the P sound just open the mouth and make an N sound.
So something, something, something, something.
Okay? Don't open the mouth.
some go to the P something and make the end inside the mouth don't open keep it closed something something something nothing sounds like and you T nut keep the tongue at the top of the mouth don't finish don't say not just say nut n, keep the n, keep the t.
I'm sorry. Keep the tongue on top of the mouth and just make the n sound.
No. No. No. And the same thing with get ting, get ting.
If we say it fast, Just get nn, get nn, get tt, don't finish the t and make the n sound.
These words are super common in American English and many Americans, from Barack Obama to George W.
Bush, from the South to the North, from California to New York, all of those people have said something, nuttin' and gettin'.
It's absolutely true.
So, I've got a dialogue that uses all three words.
Listen carefully, here you go.
You want something from McDonald's?
Nothin'. I'm gettin' an apple pie.
I said I don't want nuttin'.
Yeah, sounds like a couple of country people.
You want something from McDonald's?
Grammatically do you want something from McDonald's?
But many Americans you want something from McDonald's you want something from McDonald's you want something from McDonald's and the answer is nuttin nuttin proper English.
Nothing nothing I don't want anything that would be perfect but in daily English nothing.
Then the Next guy, I'm gettin' an apple pie, I'm gettin' an apple pie, I'm gettin' an, I'm getting an apple pie.
Very difficult. I'm getting an apple pie, I'm gettin' an apple pie, I'm gettin' an apple pie.
In the last guy, I said I don't want nothing.
I said I don't want nothing.
Proper pronunciation.
I said I don't want nothing Proper grammar. I said I don't want anything There you have it So this is a real American style conversation.
Let's listen to it two more times You want something from McDonald's nuttin.

I said I don't want nothin You want something from McDonald's?
Nothin'. I am getting an apple pie.
