📋 Summary

Giant Bombcast: Board Games, Sonic Recompilations, and the Co-op Mount Rushmore

In this episode of Bombcast Revengeance, host Jan Ochoa is joined by Nikki Grayson and Sean Mcdowell to discuss everything from the existential dread of aging at parties to the chaotic, physics-defying world of cooperative gaming.

The "Old Man" Realization

Jan kicks off the show with a humorous existential crisis, noting that as he approaches 30, he feels like the "Baccalar of GB Kids." The conversation shifts to the necessity of party etiquette for those under 35—specifically, the demand for better catering. Jan argues that if a party has an outdoor space, not having a "taco man" is "actually homophobic, transphobic, and racist," emphasizing that hosts should value supporting local businesses to keep their guests fed and hydrated.

Board Games and the Magenta Collection

Jan shares his enthusiasm for the Magenta collection by CMYK Games, which includes titles like Fruit Fight, Duos, Fives, and Figment. He highlights Fruit Fight as a "low stakes, high stakes" push-your-luck game that relies on card counting and strategy. The group also discusses the importance of video tutorials over reading manuals, with Sean noting that these videos often point out common mistakes that "make people have a bad time," which he finds "fucking huge."

Tech, Sonic, and Tony Hawk

Sean dives into the technical side of gaming, discussing the Sonic Unleashed decompilation/recompilation project. He explains that reverse-engineering the game to port it to PC allows for native 4K resolution and high frame rates, effectively breathing new life into a game that was previously difficult to play. The group also reminisces about THUG Pro, a modded version of Tony Hawk’s Underground. Sean recounts seeing players perform physics-defying maneuvers—like wall-planting off invisible walls—that left him feeling like he "kind of wanted to stop playing" because the skill ceiling is so incredibly high.

The Co-op Mount Rushmore

In a segment inspired by Jeff Grubb, the hosts attempt to build a "Mount Rushmore of Co-op Games." The process is chaotic, involving a Google Sheet and constant debate over which games deserve to be "carved into the rock."

  • The Final List: The group eventually settles on a definitive seven: Portal 2, Rock Band, X-Men Arcade, Minecraft, Halo 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Lego Star Wars.
  • The Debates: The trio spends significant time debating the merits of games like Overcooked (which Sean dislikes because it "promotes yelling"), Baldur’s Gate 3 (which they agree is a "nightmare to play co-op" due to save-file limitations), and Crackdown 2 (which Nikki jokingly champions).
  • The Winner: After much deliberation, they conclude that Rock Band is the number one co-op experience because it is "the most over with regular people."

Closing Thoughts

The episode wraps up with a bizarre breakdown of the upcoming Minecraft movie plot, which Jan describes as an "isekai" where Jack Black plays a man who "yearns to work in the mines." The hosts conclude by encouraging listeners to "climb a rock" this weekend, reminding everyone that while the games they discuss are great, the real goal is to "work together."
