📋 Summary

Conquering the Heights: Deirdre Keene’s Everest Extreme Ultra Marathon

In a recent episode of the Allie on the Run show, host Allie Feller sits down with adventurer and consultant Deirdre Keene to discuss her latest monumental feat: the Everest Extreme Ultra Marathon. Keene, a pediatric ICU nurse turned McKinsey consultant, has become a regular on the show for her awe-inspiring endurance achievements, including winning the World Marathon Challenge. This latest endeavor saw her traversing the Himalayas for three weeks, culminating in a 43-mile ultra-marathon at high altitude.

The Logistical Challenge of Adventure

Keene explains that the Everest Extreme Ultra Marathon is far more than just a race; it is a three-week expedition. "No one shows up at Everest Base Camp and just runs," she notes. The process involves a 16-day trek to acclimatize to the extreme altitude. Keene managed this by utilizing her company’s "Take Time" program, which allows employees to take unpaid time off while maintaining their employment, a strategy she emphasizes is crucial for her "quality of life" amidst intense work hours.

The Island Peak Summit: An Unplanned Escalation

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Keene opted to join a small group to summit Island Peak, a 20,000-foot mountain, prior to the ultra. Despite having "no experience" with mountaineering equipment, she embraced the challenge. She describes the harrowing process of using a "Jumar" to ascend vertical rock walls and the physical toll of "dehydration" at high altitude. "The sense of achievement... is very hard to verbalize," she shares, noting how the experience built her confidence for the race ahead.

Race Day: The Extreme Ultra

On race day, the participants faced a grueling 43-mile course. Keene highlights the "technical" nature of the terrain, which included "pure ice" and "slippy stones." Running at altitudes above 15,000 feet made even simple movements difficult, with Keene describing her pace as "hopping and plopping." A unique aspect of her journey was being paired with a local Sherpa, a young boy who guided her through the most difficult sections. Despite the language barrier, they formed a bond defined by "exchange of snacks" and mutual support. Keene completed the race in 15 hours, battling both exhaustion and the mental challenge of navigating dangerous mountain paths.

The Escape from the Himalayas

Following the race, the expedition faced an unexpected crisis. Due to poor weather and logistical issues, the group became stranded, forcing them to abandon air travel in favor of a grueling, multi-day trek and an "overnight bus" ride back to Kathmandu. Keene recounts the warmth of the local community, specifically a woman who opened her home to 30 stranded travelers, providing food and shelter. This experience, she says, was a "testament to how incredible the Sherpa people are."

Reflections on a Life of Adventure

Reflecting on the experience, Keene emphasizes the "extreme bond" formed with people from diverse backgrounds—including participants from India, China, Hungary, Iran, and Australia. She notes that the lack of connectivity and the ability to be "fully present in the moment" were the true highlights of the trip. As she looks toward future goals, including a 100-mile race at UTMB and a climb of Kilimanjaro, Keene remains committed to living life to the fullest, proving that even with the pressures of a professional career, extraordinary adventures are within reach for those willing to commit.
