Redesigning Your Life: Five Transformational Habits

In this episode of the Good Life Project, host Jonathan Fields explores how to move beyond mere goal-setting toward sustainable, identity-shifting change. While many understand the "what" of a better life—exercise, healthy eating, and meaningful work—the challenge lies in consistent execution. Fields introduces five "transformational, yet totally doable" habits designed to be integrated into one's daily routine, moving from intentional behaviors to automatic, life-changing rituals.

1. The Morning Hug

Human connection and touch are vital for physical and mental well-being. Fields defines the "morning hug" as a two-part habit: a physical embrace (lasting 5–10 seconds) and an emotional check-in. Research indicates this practice lowers stress and increases oxytocin. For those without a partner, Fields suggests "havening" (self-touch) or using technology to facilitate a virtual check-in, emphasizing that the core goal is to feel "seen" and connected.

2. Teardrop Breathing

Breathing is a powerful tool to regulate the nervous system. Fields shares his "teardrop breathing" technique: inhale for a count, pause for the same count, exhale for double the count, and pause again for double the count. This extended exhale helps "down-regulate" the nervous system, moving the body from a state of stress or anxiety into a centered, grounded place. He notes that this has become an automatic part of his morning routine.

3. Movement as Play

Physical movement is essential for long-term health and triggers the release of BDNF, which Fields describes as "fertilizer for growing new brain cells." To turn exercise from a chore into a habit, he suggests engaging the mind by choosing activities that require attentional focus, such as hiking on jagged trails rather than running on a monotonous treadmill. This shift transforms movement into "play" and "flow," making it something you yearn to do rather than a task you "have to" do.

4. Nature Immersion

Drawing on the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), Fields advocates for daily nature immersion. Science shows that exposure to natural environments reduces inflammation and anxiety. He encourages listeners to "scan your day" and find ways to integrate nature—whether by taking meetings outdoors, working near a window with a view of trees, or keeping plants in the workspace. Bringing nature into your environment can profoundly influence your physiological state.

5. Mindfulness Meditation

Fields identifies mindfulness as the "game-changing element" that provides control over one's attention. By using the breath as an "anchor," the practice trains you to notice when your mind drifts, acknowledge it without shame, and gently bring your awareness back. He emphasizes that the goal is not to eliminate all thoughts, but to develop the skill of "focusing, noticing, letting go, and then coming back." Over time, this practice allows one to remain present and less reactive, even in high-stakes or uncertain circumstances.

Conclusion: Building the Habit Loop

Fields concludes by stressing that these habits are not about perfection but about small, meaningful changes. To sustain them, he suggests anchoring new behaviors to existing daily routines (like brushing your teeth). By repeating these actions, they move from intentional, energy-intensive tasks to automatic habits that define who you are and how you navigate the world.
