Beyond Language: A Journey of Confidence, Community, and Self-Transformation

In a recent episode of her podcast, Hadar hosted a student success panel featuring members of her program, NewSound. The discussion moved far beyond the technicalities of pronunciation, revealing that the true transformation for English learners lies in the intersection of mindset, community support, and self-acceptance.

The Struggle: Beyond Just Grammar and Vocabulary

For many of the panelists, the initial hurdle was not a lack of English knowledge, but a deep-seated insecurity. Moniko, who lives in New York, shared how he struggled to speak English even in his daily life, often opting for Spanish because he lacked the confidence to engage with native speakers. He described a pivotal moment during the pandemic where he realized, "I'm not writing anymore"—a decision to stop hiding behind text and start speaking. Similarly, Jessica, a corporate professional, felt like a "robot" when speaking to clients, constantly comparing herself to others and feeling inhibited by her status as a minority in the workplace.

The Power of Mindset and Prosody

The panelists emphasized that NewSound is not merely an English course; it is a "mindset coaching" program. Jessica highlighted how learning about prosody—the rhythm, intonation, and stress of speech—helped her connect with others on an emotional level. She realized that she didn't need to sound like her directors or VPs; she needed to bring her "authentic self" to the room. By shifting her focus from technical perfection to personal expression, she found that her confidence naturally followed.

Robin, a vocal coach and language teacher from Belgium, added that the program helped her move past the "overwhelming thoughts of insecurity" that plague even advanced speakers. She noted that confidence is often more important than linguistic proficiency, stating, "It seems like confidence was more important than their Dutch," a lesson she observed in her own students and applied to her English journey.

The Essential Role of Community

A recurring theme was the necessity of human connection. The participants agreed that learning in isolation is insufficient. Jessica initially viewed finding a speaking partner as just "another task" or "homework," but it soon became the "biggest gift and biggest reward" of the program.

  • Safe Spaces: The community provides a safe environment to make mistakes without fear of judgment. Moniko noted, "I don't really care now that the people listening to me and say, or judge me."
  • Accountability: Coaches and peers push students to step out of their comfort zones. Robin emphasized that for neurodivergent learners or those with limited energy, the structured nature of the program and the supportive coaching team made consistency possible.

Redefining Success: Self-Acceptance

The panel concluded with a powerful message about the true nature of fluency. It is not about reaching a destination or achieving perfect pronunciation; it is about the journey of self-love. Jessica poignantly remarked, "It's really about self-acceptance, self-love and self-compassion."

By the end of the discussion, it was clear that the students had achieved more than just better English. They had gained the courage to pursue new dreams—such as law school for Jessica or professional certification for Alejandra—and the resilience to handle life's challenges. As Hadar summarized, the program is designed to help students "take all that passive knowledge... and use it confidently and spontaneously."

For those on the fence about joining, the advice from the panelists was unanimous: "Don't hesitate." As Moniko simply put it, "Just do it." The investment is not just in language skills, but in becoming a better, more authentic version of oneself.
