In today's episode, you'll discover two secrets for making a massively positive first impression, or later impression, every time you want to, no matter who is in the room.
Welcome back to Speak Up, the podcast for high performing introverts, including you, social introverts, where we reveal the charisma and communication secrets of A-listers so that you get the recognition and the opportunities you have earned.
I am your host.
Laura Camacho, your magical executive presence coach, godmother, and strategist.
And by the end of today's short episode, you will know a single simple, easy exercise to boost your mood and charisma in under 90 seconds, no matter how your day is going.
And an unorthodox life coaching tool to crank up your personal magnetism before any big event or social engagement.
And finally, how these precision emotional intelligence tools can massively amplify your executive presence and why that matters.
So let's be real, first impressions are everything.
And this is not just for first impressions.
If you're going to a meeting where you need to dial up your influence and impact.
Studies show that people form opinions about you in as little as seven seconds.
For those of us who are not flaming extroverts, that can feel like a lot of pressure, especially when you're walking into a room full of people that you don't know or if it's a high stakes meeting.
But here's the good news.
You don't need to be the loudest.
You don't have to turn into a chatterbox, all right?
It's about something else.
It's about your energy and your presence, and your executive presence is a reflection of your confidence and who you are in the room.
Now, these two tools that I'm sharing today are not deep life transformational work.
They're just two quick tools that work So that you can crank it up.
Maybe you're not really feeling that glorious and you have to make a really good impression.
So when you walk into a room with a high energy vibe, people notice and that is super attractive.
One thing that helps this metaphor someone shared with me once about thinking about people as being low battery.
Like everybody's low battery.
Everybody's tired.
Everybody's exhausted.
Everybody has things that are not going well.
And if, for the hour of that meeting or the 90 minutes of that social occasion, if you can control your own and amplify your own energy, you can charge other people's batteries?
And that is magnetic, that is emotional intelligence and action and that is what builds your executive presence.
So this is first a ridiculously simple exercise that I learned from a very charismatic photographer.
It will take you 90 seconds or less.
It will boost your mood and your charisma, even if your day has been a total mess.
It's called the great exercise from Nicholas Boothman, and this is how it works.
Preferably, you need a mirror, but sometimes you won't be able to have a mirror.
It still works, but it's just faster because it's so ridiculous.
It works faster than a mirror.
It could be, you know, a mirror from your purse, or it could be the bathroom, or it could be your car rear view mirror.
It doesn't have to be fully.
You can even use your phone, right?
You could use the camera mode, but you just look yourself in the eye and start repeating the word.
Great.
Great.
Great great great great great great great great great great, great great, until you'll feel a shift.
You will feel even I just feel it right now like a little bit of relaxation, a little bit more of a smile, a bigger smile.
Yes, why does this work?
It's not about the word itself, although great is a good word to repeat, but the rapid repetition interrupts negative thought patterns.
It triggers your brain to release chemicals like dopamine.
And then seeing yourself be so ridiculous is always a good thing.
That radiates confidence.
So try it before your next big event or big meeting.
Great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great.
It's going to put a smile on your face.
And that's what people want.
They want that positive attraction.
So if you know, for some strange reason the word great doesn't vibe with you, pick another positive word.
It could be yes.
It could be delightful.
But I think great is a great word to repeat.
All right.
So now we're going to talk about another tool.
I'm giving you two quick and dirty mood boosting charisma amplifying tools.
One is great.
Second is useful, called the energy dial, and I learned this from life coaching school woman whose name is Tanya Lee, and she now has a school of self-image, but this is years ago.
She taught me this and I've been using it ever since.
It's one reason why people are so surprised that I'm an introvert, because I come across as very magnetic, right.
Well, because I learned this, this trick and, And so you have to be able to assess your current energy level.
Like right now, I am definitely 8 to 9, you know, like 8.8.
If I'm 10, I cannot even sit still to record this podcast.
So, you know, 10 for me is like off the charts and...
I really like to be between eight and nine because I'm positive, energetic, but I'm not hyper.
I'm not manic, right?
I don't want to be bouncing around.
And then, you know, when you're working on something, you might be four, five, six.
And if you're just having a bad day, you're going to be at, you know, three, two, four.
And if you're really despondent, you're going to be one.
You want to aim not for a 10.
You just want to aim to what can I do to feel one notch better?
If I'm a four, what can I do to get to a five?
So inhaling and exhaling usually works better.
Standing up straighter, improving your posture, walking down the hall, doing a power pose drinking water.
You don't need to call your therapist.
It's really taking control and amplifying what's good in you and boosting your own confidence hormones.
So why does it work?
Because it leverages emotional intelligence to shift your internal state.
Intentionally, you're becoming a master of emotional intelligence.
When you show up with higher energy, you project warmth.
Warmth is a key ingredient of executive presence.
You project confidence. and people can't ignore you.
So why do these tools matter?
Because they are precision emotional intelligence hacks that elevate your executive presence.
Yes, you're welcome.
When you do the great exercise, you're rewiring your brain for positivity, which makes you more approachable and magnetic.
When you turn up your energy dial, you're signaling to everybody that you're engaged, that you're charging their batteries.
So you can use them both.
You can just use one.
It's going to put you ahead of the game before any situation where there is the boardroom presentation a cocktail party.
It's a vibe that says, I'm here.
I have something of value to add to this situation.
And that's the kind of executive presence that opens doors and builds connections.
So those are your two tools for today.
The great, repeating the word great, and visualizing the dial.
If you want to know more about where you are in executive presence, I have a scorecard that's in the show notes where you will answer like 15 questions about the four pillars that are in my executive presence mastery system.
So you get an idea of where you need to amplify yourself to have more executive presence.
Have a great day and I will catch you on the next episode.
