Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me everyday.
Come on, let's master English!
Hello everybody, thank you very much for downloading daily easy English expression.
Today's podcast is brought to you by DDM.
I'll talk about DDM at the end of the lesson.
Today's expression, very, very good expression to go down.
Now, to go down can be a phrasal verb, but I want to talk about a different meaning, and this can be very confusing.
To go down or to come down.
Many times in American dialogues, sitcoms, movies, and in DDM we always see this expression, to go down.
Go down to the office.
Go down to the store.
Go down to see my mom.
Why do we say go? I'm sorry why do we say down?
Can we say up? Can we say over?
No. If an American says go down, they do mean down and down has three possible meanings.
The first meaning of down is downtown, the center of town, so I'm going down to work.
Where do most people work?
What's the image of where most people work?
Downtown and the big office building, so I'm going down to my office that means means you're going downtown.
The other meaning of down is physically down.
For example, if you live on the 10th floor, but you need to go to the convenience store on the first floor, you could say I'm going down to the store.
And it literally means down 10 floors, 10 stories to the ground level.
Ok? so physically downward. And the other meaning of down is to the south.
So I'm going down to visit my parents, that almost certainly means my parents live south of me.
So if I live in Seattle, in America, which is in the state of Washington, and my parents live in Los Angeles, if I go to visit them, I need to travel south.
So I would say I'm going down to see my parents and everybody would say where?
And if I said someplace north then you mean up.
And yes that's right everybody, up means north.
But up can have other meanings too.
east, west, we say over.
I'm going over to my parents.
Yes, so this up, down, and over does have specific meanings.
Today we're focusing on down to go down.
I'm going down to my office, I'm going down to the store, I'm going down to visit my parents.
They all have different meanings, okay?
So check out the dialog.
are you going down to the store today I went down yesterday please I need some more beer go get it yourself what a lazy guy if you need beer go down to the store and buy your own beer why are you asking your wife yes that was his wife that's a woman yeah it was okay so once again to go down down has three meanings downtown or in a southern direction or physically Downward down a ladder down the elevator down the stairs Do you understand now?
I want you guys to create your own?
Examples give me a sample of when you went down to someplace Okay So remember you can leave me a message on Twitter that's at Coach Shane C O A C H S H A N E on Facebook it's ESL coach Shane and on our Google plus community the community name is let's master English Google search and you can find it it's easy leave me a message I'm going down to where all right so remember go down come down we use it the same way all Alright lets check that dialogue out two more times.

Once again thanks so much everybody for listening and downloading this podcast. I sincerely appreciate the fact that you all are awesome!
Now where do I get these expressions?
Well, many of the expressions do come from you you guys ask me.
But most of them come from the news and from sitcoms on television, if you're watching TV or watching the news you will hear many of these expressions that I use and I teach all these expressions in my DDM classes.
So my students really get a full lesson on real daily American English, and we focus not just on expressions, but also pronunciation.
How do we say it? Cancellation and linking, all of those important things.
We talk about listening skills, comprehension skills, and of course American culture.
So DDM is the class and it is a fantastic class but it's a real class all right you will not find a similar class online.
This is a monthly class every month we have eight lessons.
