Welcome to the Ada's English Podcast. My name is Jack and I'm here with my co -host Sochel and today we're going to do an idioms episode.
And Sochel, why don't you share today's idioms with us, with our listeners.
Today's idioms are to quit cold turkey, to kick the habit, and jonesing.
So let's start off with the first one to quit cold turkey jack what does that mean if you quit something cold turkey it means you just stop doing it immediately so like quitting smoking cold turkey means like i smoke on wednesday but on thursday zero cigarettes i'm done i go from like 20 to a day to zero just nothing yes yeah or like you go from drinking um to not to never drinking again right uh lots of stuff so you use it in in a lot of aspects um and people a lot of people have like two ways to quit which is either they quit cold turkey or they're kind of a methodical they do like a quitting
plan like let's say you want to tapering tapering yeah like tapering tapering yeah like let's say that you smoke you smoke five packs a day and you think okay well well, I'm gonna next month, I'll move it down to four packs.
And then next month, three packs, and so on and so forth.
Right. Yeah. But quitting cold turkey just means you went from smoking five packs a day to never smoking a single cigarette again.
And you've upheld that.
Yeah. And the downside, I think of the of the cold turkey, well, there's like a good, there's like a benefit and a demerit, I guess you could say, like, I mean, the benefit is the the sooner you stop a bad habit, the better.
But the relapse rate, I think, is higher for cold turkey than if you just taper off something.
It kind of, you're still doing the bad habit, but less, you know, in a kind of less severe way over time.
But your chances of maintaining quitting, fully quitting is better, I think, when you taper off.
I don't know. What do you think about that?
um i think it really depends on your personality i think there's like two camps there's i know like my grandpa used to smoke cigarettes and then he quit cold turkey when my oldest sister was born so wow okay yeah and so he never smoked again i never saw him smoke cigarette again and then he also quit drinking cold turkey way back when my mom and her sisters were still kids kids so he has very strong willpower but i think for people who find that they try to quit cold turkey and then they go back to something and they try to quit cold turkey again and they go back to something tapering is probably
a better plan yeah i guess you're right it's like how much ability you have to kind of deal with the the pain and suffering of like withdrawal symptoms you know what i mean yes it's like when you want to smoke so badly some people are just really are very resilient you know like your grandfather they're just like i don't care how much it hurts i'm just i'm not going back and other people i think will kind of just go oh it's not worth it it's too it's too hard and they'll fall back so if they taper then you don't have to really suffer the withdrawal symptoms as severely as cold turkey so i guess
yeah you're right personality is has a lot to do with it i think yeah what's their second one kicking the habit Ah, okay.
Yeah. Kick the habit.
Um, just means to quit, right?
To quit something. Yes.
To quit, to kick a habit.
So if your habit is smoking, then you're trying to quit smoking.
People will ask you like, Oh, are you trying to kick the habit?
Or I'm trying to kick the habit.
You know, it just means I'm trying to quit something.
Yeah, exactly. It's, it's.
Graduation is a milestone.
You've spent 18 years getting them to this moment.
now let famous daves handle the graduation party skip the stress and serve up a spread everyone will cheer for with georgia chopped pork barbecue pulled chicken sliders wings ribs and sides that'll keep even picky teenagers coming back for seconds all starting at just ten dollars a person parents you've done the hard work let famous daves take it from here make your grad party the valedictorian of flavor visit famousdaves .com it kind of makes sense in like a as a metaphor like you're kicking a bad habit away from you you know just like so kick the bad habit and yeah be done with it and then how
about jonesing yeah jonesing is a weird one this one is like kind of similar topic but different you know has nothing to do with quitting necessarily jonesing has more to do with the withdrawal symptoms symptoms so if you're if you smoke let's say uh two packs of cigarettes a day and then you quit cold turkey you try to kick the habit and you know quit cold turkey and then uh the next day you have a really strong withdrawal symptoms you could say i'm really jonesing a cigarette right now i'm jonesing something a cigarette uh an alcoholic drink whatever it might be whatever whatever your vice is.
Yeah. And we were, we were discussing the etymology, the potential etymology of Jonesing earlier.
And I think, I mean, this is just our fan theory to put it that way, which is just like our best educated guess about what the etymology, like the origin of this phrase is.
And I thought that Jonesing comes from another meta, like another metaphor or idiom or figure of speech that is keeping up with the joneses the joneses are like let's say your neighbors and they get a brand new car and then you want a brand new car it's like keeping up appearances or keeping up and wanting what the other person has that's on higher status than you or has something that you don't have so i think maybe jonesing comes from there like that makes sense yeah yeah that's my best educated guess because i can't imagine what else it comes from yeah i can't think of anything otherwise it's
really old and obscure and we wouldn't even yeah it's probably like some world war one you know thing some guy named jones or whatever you know wanted a cigarette in 1910 right and mostly people use it for cigarettes which is kind of weird because i've never heard anyone say i'm really jonesing for like a beer i'm jonesing for a cup of coffee have you heard yeah for nicotine is it's really like yeah that's the only time i've ever heard it you know jonesing i mean you could say like i'm jonesing a cup of coffee but it's we would much more we're much more likely to say i'm craving a cup of coffee
yes i'm jonesing that's really all it means is i'm craving or i I want something.
But most people just, it's weird. It's like something used very specifically mostly for like smoking cigarettes, like tobacco cigarettes.
And so, yeah, that's really the etymology in the whole.
Yeah. I think the third one, jonesing, our third idiom is dying in the language just like the cigarettes are dying in regular culture.
You know what I mean?
yeah that's true i would say yeah i would say it's definitely getting wiped out yeah yeah all right listeners well if you enjoyed that episode make sure to leave us a comment down below and follow our podcast on spotify red circle or anywhere else that you listen to podcasts like apple podcasts as well make sure to shoot us an email at a to z english podcast at gmail .com and join the wechat group so that we can catch up and we'll see you guys next time bye bye Bye -bye.
