📋 Summary

Introduction to the Narrative

In this podcast episode, Mike Bilbre introduces the third season of Stories to Learn English, specifically tailored for B1 and B2 level learners. The narrative, titled "Dad," is inspired by the author’s recent holiday on the Spanish coast of Cadiz. The story centers on a family fishing trip, providing a rich context for learning vocabulary related to the sea, nautical equipment, and fishing gear.

Nautical and Seaside Vocabulary

To prepare learners for the story, the podcast defines essential B1-level terminology. The seaside is described as a destination for leisure, while the coast refers to the geographical meeting point of land and sea. Key marine terms include waves—the undulating movement of water—and the cabin, the enclosed space on a boat where the steering mechanism, or wheel, is located. The author also touches on nautical directions: port (left) and starboard (right). Being physically present on a vessel is defined as being on board, a term applied to both boats and airplanes. Unlike sailboats, this particular vessel relies on an engine fueled by diesel or petrol.

The Art and Equipment of Fishing

Moving into specialized terminology, the podcast explains the mechanics of fishing. The rod is the long pole held by the angler, while the reel—a device attached to the rod—is used to wind the line in, allowing the fisherman to bring the catch toward the boat. The most critical component is the hook, the sharp metal part that pierces the fish’s mouth. To entice the fish, one must use bait. The author notes that "bait" is a more advanced (C1/C2) term, defined as food or an artificial lure designed to attract fish.

Character Dynamics in "Dad"

The story introduces William (Will), a 12-year-old boy, and his complex feelings toward his father, Harry, and his charismatic Uncle Tom. Uncle Tom is portrayed as a hyper-competent, adventurous figure—an expert in extreme sports and a "leader" in family gatherings. In contrast, Harry is a modest secondary school teacher who struggles with physical activities and appears less confident. The narrative tension is subtle: Will clearly admires Uncle Tom’s vitality while harboring a sense of pity for his father’s perceived inadequacies. This dynamic is further complicated by the arrival of Stephen Little, an acquaintance of Uncle Tom, whose presence and decision to bring beer on the fishing trip introduce a sense of unease and potential conflict for the family.

The Fishing Expedition

As the group sets out from the harbour in Cadiz, the story highlights the transition from the calm of the shore to the open sea, where the waves become larger and more challenging. The technical climax of the first part involves the preparation of the fishing gear. Stephen explains the equipment to the family, revealing that the bait used on this specific trip is not traditional organic matter, but rather a "colourful plastic fish" equipped with "six very sharp metal hooks." This artificial lure is designed to move rhythmically through the water to mimic live prey. As the lines are cast and the picnic begins, the stage is set for the second part of the story, leaving listeners to wonder how the family dynamics—and the fishing trip itself—will unfold.
