Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim.
Today is Thursday, January 22nd, 2026.
And we begin with the most extreme winter storm of the season so far honing in on the eastern U.S.
Damaging ice and heavy snow are expected, as well as a big blast of Arctic air, bringing with it the coldest temperatures to date.
The worst of the weather is expected to spread snow, sleet and freezing rain from the southern Rockies and Plain States to the mid-south, starting tomorrow.
The National Weather Service placed much of Oklahoma, as well as parts of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana, under winter storm watches and said more advisories, watches and warnings are likely over the next day or two.
By this weekend, the deep freeze will grip the Northeast, with temperatures up to 30 degrees below normal for this time of year.
The global panic over Greenland may be over.
Yesterday, President Trump said he and NATO's Secretary General reached the framework of a future deal that involves the entire Arctic region.
Details are few so far, but he reversed course on taxing nations that disagreed with his plans.
The news came as a relief to U.S. allies in Europe and to investors on Wall Street.
Stock surged on the announcement, making up almost all the ground they lost the day before.
Taylor submitted the song's all-too-well 10-minute version...
Blank Space, Antihero, Love Story, and The Last Great American Dynasty for her successful entry.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set for June 11th at the Marriott Marquis in New York City.
Close to the time, she's expected to tie the knot with her fiancé, Travis Kelsey.
Want to ring a Republican or dial a Democrat?
An experimental payphone project is making it possible for callers to connect, in an effort to bridge the political divide.
It's the work of a Colorado-based biotech company called Matter Neuroscience that, according to The Guardian, placed old payphones in booths in two of the country's most ideologically opposed cities.
One sits in San Francisco, California's Mission District, the other in downtown Abilene, Texas.
Both are marked with signs telling callers that if they pick up one phone, it will ring the other, likely connecting strangers across party lines.
The company's co-founder, Ben Goldhurst, says the goal is to see if giving people the opportunity to talk to someone with different political views could lead to more understanding.
Our thesis is that humans are pretty awesome and if given the opportunity, we'll look to find common ground because biologically that actually gives us a lot more happiness.
It was a grand entrance at a grand slam.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka made her debut at this year's Australian Open sporting an outfit perhaps more suited for the runway.
The dress she wore for her first round match was an aquamarine jellyfish ensemble, a tribute to her daughter Shai's fascination with the sea creature.
For the walkout.
She completed the look with palazzo pants, a veil, a white umbrella and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with a butterfly which, according to the Associated Press, referenced the butterfly that briefly landed on her face during an Aussie Open match in 2021.
After her three-set win Tuesday, Naomi explained When I was playing.
I just told myself keep your head on the path.
If she beats you, then that's unfortunate.
But hey, at least you're trending on social media.
Still ahead, a lost and found success story thanks to some hospital helpers.

In today's Kid News.
Kicker, the x-ray machine at an Iowa hospital was put to the test in an unusual search and rescue mission.
Patient Susan Sinwell had wrapped a pair of sentimental heirloom rings in a paper napkin before undergoing a routine medical procedure at Grundy County Memorial.
After the scan, she threw out the napkin and didn't even realize what she'd done till the next day.
She alerted Craig Buskell, the man who had taken her X-ray, who in turn got waste management to sort through about 60 bags of garbage with metal detectors.
Mr Buskell then ran each bag that beeped through a mobile X-ray machine and, sure enough, eventually struck gold.
Honestly, I didn't think we were going to find them, but we did, Buskell told CBS2 Iowa.
Sinwell had tears in her eyes as she thanked the staff for going above and beyond.
She said she was stunned at how many helped to recover her rings and called the hospital the best place for care.
Thanks again to the Goat Gonkers of San Mateo, California, for sponsoring today's quiz.
Happy early birthday to Ahila.
