Good morning and welcome to KID News.
I'm Kim.
Today is Thursday, January 15, 2026.
And we begin with another falling iguana warning for Floridians.
After a January thaw that brought warm weather to much of the country, a polar vortex pattern is moving in.
According to the National Weather Service, frigid air is expected to hit the eastern seaboard today and tomorrow, with temperatures dropping to 10 to 20 degrees below average.
That includes parts of the Sunshine State where lows of 29 degrees near Tampa tomorrow morning means the muscles of the little lizards may lock up so much that they drop from the trees.
Forecasters say the cold will hit in three waves, with the worst due to arrive next week, with possible sub-zero temperatures affecting about 40 million people from Minnesota to Maine.
All of this comes as, according to the Washington Post, the nation is experiencing one of its warmest winters, likely because the West has seen temperatures well above average, offsetting the cold in the Midwest and Northeast.
Nike is getting in on a new court craze.
Teenager and number one ranked player, Anna Lee Waters, became the first professional pickleballer to join Nike's roster of athletes by signing with the company this week.
The terms of the deal have not been released.
But the 18-year-old, who turned pro at age 12, already earns roughly 2 million a year from the United Pickleball Association, according to USA Today.
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the US, with the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reporting a 311 increase in participation between 2022 and 2024 and continual growth since then.
Anna is expected to debut her new Nike apparel at the Carvana Masters Tournament in Rancho Mirage California, this weekend.
It's a stamp that packs a punch.
Muhammad Ali, the most famous boxer of all time, is being honored today with two commemorative US postage stamps.
The unveiling is set to take place in Louisville Kentucky, where the three-time heavyweight champion grew up.
Ali died in 2016 at the age of 74 after living with Parkinson's disease for more than 30 years.
According to ABC News, each sheet of Muhammad Ali Forever stamps features two designs –
One is a black and white photo of Ali in his famous boxing pose.
In the other, he's wearing a pinstripe suit while working as an activist and humanitarian.
22 million stamps have been printed, but according to the U.S.
Postal Service, they will not be reprinted once they sell out.
City officials in Los Angeles are moving to toss out an obscure law that made it a crime to play catch.
By a vote of 14 to 0, the city council agreed to ax Code, Section 5616, a law believed to have been established in 1945 that makes playing catch on certain residential streets or sidewalks punishable by a 1000 fine and up to six months in jail.
According to NBC News, the city council member who moved to repeal the law called it uncommonly silly.
No word on whether the law was ever actually enforced.
We'll be right back.
According to Axios, the Girl Scouts cookie program is the largest girl-led entrepreneurial enterprise in the world, with proceeds going to local councils and troops.
Cookie prices vary by location, but are still about $5 to $7 a box.

In today's Kid News Kicker, it was the main attraction at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.
More than 150 competitors and 1000-plus spectators turned out for the annual mullet hairstyle contest Monday to see who would reign as king of the short in the front, long in the back do.
The winner, 10-year-old Drew Fleshet of Dallas Pennsylvania, who wore a red and black shirt to honor movie character Joe Dirt and Joe's trademark, mullet.
According to the Associated Press, Drew was not the youngest contestant by a long shot.
Brittany Williamson brought her three-year-old son Mason, who she says ended up with a mullet quite by accident when the hair on the back of his head grew more quickly when he was a baby.
Adding we just clean it up in the front and keep the party going.
And now, shout-outs for our teachers.
