Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Tori.
Today is Tuesday, December 9th, 2025.
And we begin with cleanup and concern in Japan this morning following a massive 75 magnitude earthquake.
The shaker hit off the country's northeast coast Monday evening, local time, triggering tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for approximately 90000 residents.
There's reportedly damage, none of it major, but the worry now is for follow-up quakes.
A week-long advisory for more shaking is in effect.
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries on the planet due to its location on the Ring of Fire, which is an undersea horseshoe-shaped region where tectonic plates collide, creating deep trenches, active volcanoes and plenty of seismic activity.
From activity deep in the sea to high in the sky.
A massive ejection of plasma and gases from the sun means more than a dozen US states are in for another round of northern lights tonight.
Usually, the sky show is only visible around the North Pole, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, or NOAA, predicts this eruption will be so big that residents of 15 states, including Michigan Montana, Maine and Wisconsin, will get a front row seat.
The best time to look is around midnight, but you can also try right after sunset or before sunrise.
The lights happen when energy from the sun bumps into Earth's magnetic field, kind of like when you rub a balloon on your hair and it makes sparks.
Even if your state isn't on the list, you might still see those northern lights if the sky is dark and clear.
The Golden Globe nominations are in and making headlines for who was ignored as much as for who received nods.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were both nominated for acting in Wicked for Good, but the movie itself didn't make the cut for Best Picture.
Other surprises?
Acting snubs for Gwyneth Paltrow, Sidney Sweeney, and Catherine Lanassa from The Pit.
Also no box office recognition for the top three earners of the year a Minecraft movie, Lilo and Stitch and Superman, but a nod for Netflix's K-pop Demon Hunters, even though it had a very short theatrical release.
As the AP wrote, the math isn't mathing.
The 2026 Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, January 11 2026, and will be on both CBS and Paramount.
What's old is new again for Gen Z, who seem to be gravitating to tech that was popular before they were even born.
A growing number of young people now say they prefer DVDs and vinyl over streaming film cameras over their phones and game playing devices that don't connect to the Internet.
One user explains that he's sick of software updates, ads and other interruptions and just wants to be immersed in what he's doing.
Another says he likes the physicality of actually collecting things like books and records, and that downloads with no photos or booklets just can't compete.
This seems to be the exact opposite of what was predicted when book readers and streaming platforms were launched in the early 2000s.
Many tech watchers said physical media would all but disappear.
It remains to be seen if this new move is just a fad or a sign of things to come.
It was a tough weekend on the turf for tight end Travis Kelsey.
He dropped a key pass in the fourth quarter and his Chiefs dropped another game, dwindling their chances of making the playoffs.
And now the Kelsey retirement speculation is reaching fever pitch.
Analyst Stephen A. Smith went public last night predicting that this season will be his last.
It's not like he won't be busy.
According to Harper's Bazaar, Travis and Taylor Swift will tie the knot June 13th.
Swifties know 13 is her favorite number at the Ocean House Resort in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
The venue itself is staying mum out of respect for the couple's privacy, but is denying a rumor that another couple had already booked that date, but Swift paid them off to pick another.
Still to come.
When Chick-fil-A calls, sometimes you have to answer even if you're still in your pajamas.

Gen Z. In today's Kid News Kicker, in the mood for Chick-fil-A?
For some, the hankering is hard to ignore.
Just ask five-year-old William of Jacksonville Florida, who recently woke up hungry but didn't want to bother his sleeping parents.
Instead, he slipped out of the house in his PJs and bare feet and walked to a nearby Chick-fil-A for chicken minis and a drink, which the manager kindly provided free of charge while he called police to get this youngster safely back home.
William was able to show them the way, but boy was his father Phil, surprised to find two officers and his son on the doorstep when they rang the bell.
Phil says, since the incident he has become much more careful about setting the house alarm, not just to keep people out but to keep little people in.
