Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim.
Today is Friday, November 7th, 2025.
And we begin with air travelers bracing for chaos as fewer flights are cleared for holiday takeoffs.
Beginning today, the Federal Aviation Administration is cutting air traffic at 40 high-volume US airports.
At first, it'll be just a 4% reduction.
But by next week, 10% of flights that were supposed to take off won't.
The slowdown is in response to growing staffing shortages among air traffic controllers, who are working without pay or calling out sick to protest the ongoing government shutdown.
The FAA says it's a preemptive step to ensure public safety, but it comes as millions of Americans are getting ready to travel for Thanksgiving.
New York, Washington, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Los Angeles...
Las Vegas Philadelphia, Phoenix and Seattle are among the cities that will be affected if the government shutdown now, in its 38th day, continues.
Mother Nature is turning down the thermostat sooner than expected.
Forecasters say the Midwest Northeast and even the Deep South are about to get hit with the coldest air of the season.
A mix of frigid air and changing jet stream patterns are being blamed for the earlier than usual frosty conditions.
While snow may stay light for now, weather watchers are predicting record-breaking low temps could reach all the way down to Florida, with milder temperatures expected to return by midweek.
The speculation was spot on.
After more than 30 years on Capitol Hill, U.S.
Representative and trailblazing former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, will not seek reelection at the end of her term.
She made the announcement via video yesterday.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the 85-year-old Democrat is widely viewed as one of the most powerful party bosses in US history and is even admired by her political adversaries.
In an interview quoted in the journal Republican, former Speaker Newt Gingrich said he deeply disagreed with Representative Pelosi on many issues, but considered her among the most effective leaders ever to take the gavel, saying he had enormous admiration for her persistence and the depth of her courage in fighting for the things she believed in.
Forget yellow buses.
In Montclair, New Jersey, parents and kids are commuting to school this morning on what they call a bike bus.
This rolling pack of around 350 riders pedals to school together every Friday.
Adults in orange safety vests line an approximately five-mile route each week, with families joining in along the way.
It all started three years ago, when a few groups of parents were seeking safety in numbers amid the traffic while cycling to school.
And they're not alone.
According to Bike Bus World, hundreds of similar rides operate elsewhere in the US and other countries around the world.
As the government shutdown's food aid debate plays out, in Washington, one small-town diner is doing something big.
Kids coming into Southwest Diner in Boulder City Nevada, with their parents can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner for free, no strings attached.
With nearly 500000 people in Nevada receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP benefits, statewide diner owner Cindy Ford just wants to do her part for families feeling the squeeze.
And this isn't Cindy's first time helping out her community.
She also gave out free meals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Did your favorite toy make it into the National Toy Hall of Fame this year?
Maybe it was one of your parents' favorites.
This year's three inductees announced yesterday include the stretchy gooey favorite Slime, the naval battle board game Battleship and the Test Your Knowledge Classic Trivial Pursuit.
According to the Associated Press, eligible toys must be considered iconic and appeal to multiple generations.
Winners are voted in by a mix of educators, historians, and the public.
Among this year's runners-up, Furby, Connect Four, and Snow.
Yes Snow which, had it won, would have joined other timeless classics such as Sand, The Stick and The Cardboard Box.
Still to come, Milk's favorite cookie is getting a Thanksgiving makeover.
But first, we want to say happy early birthday to Ryan Joseph of Lake Mary, Florida.
He's celebrating with his classmates today and will be the star of an epic roller skating party on Sunday.
Have a great weekend, Ryan.
Now, today's Kid News quiz.

40.
Approximately how long is Montclair's bike bus route to school?
About five miles.
In which Nevada town is a diner serving free meals to kids?

In today's Kid News Kicker this Thanksgiving flavors you might expect to find at a dinner are showing up in cookie form.
Oreo's limited edition Test and Learn collection includes six new flavors, including turkey and gravy, sweet potato and creamed corn, alongside the more dessert-friendly cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and caramel apple pie.
So it's a regular Oreo covered in a fudge infused with the holiday-themed flavor.
Oreo says its experiment won't be around for long, which could be something to be thankful for, although more adventurous snackers might want to give them a try.
Thanks again to the Joseph family of Lake Mary, Florida, for sponsoring today's quiz.
And a big birthday shout-out a few days early to Ryan, who we're told is a math whiz and loves to play soccer with his fifth-grade buddies.
Enjoy all this celebrating, Ryan.
