The New Face of Search and Rescue: Splash the Otter

Innovation in the search and rescue sector has reached an unexpected milestone with the training of an otter named Splash. According to Florida rescue expert Mike Hadsall, otters possess a unique biological mechanism for tracking scents underwater. Unlike dogs, which rely on air-based olfaction, otters "taste" the environment. Hadsall explains that the animal sucks in bubbles to which odors have attached, allowing them to track targets effectively. Having already successfully located three items, Splash is now in "high demand" across the country, proving that he is truly "making a splash" in the rescue industry.

Little League World Series: A Global Shift

The dominance of the United States in the Little League World Series has been challenged, as the powerhouse team from Chinese Taipei defeated Las Vegas, Nevada, with a decisive 7-0 victory. This win marks Chinese Taipei’s 18th championship title. This event is significant as it breaks a long-standing U.S. winning streak, with the last international loss for the U.S. occurring back in 2017 against Tokyo, Japan.

Autonomous Testing in the Big Apple

Waymo is expanding its testing footprint by bringing its robo-taxi technology to the "mean streets of Manhattan" and downtown Brooklyn. For an eight-week trial period, these vehicles will operate autonomously, though they will maintain a human driver behind the wheel for safety. While the fleet, which totals 1,500 vehicles nationwide, has completed over 10 million rides in cities like San Francisco and Austin, these specific trials in New York will not include passenger transport.

Meteorological Updates: Tropical Storm Ferdinand

Following the impact of Hurricane Erin, the Atlantic has birthed Tropical Storm Ferdinand. Intensifying near Bermuda, the storm is projected to strengthen into a hurricane. However, forecasters remain optimistic, noting that its path keeps it "hundreds of miles offshore," suggesting minimal impact on the U.S. mainland compared to its predecessor.

WNBA Attendance Records and Rising Stars

The WNBA is experiencing a period of "fandemonium," shattering all-time attendance records despite having fewer games and teams compared to the 2002 benchmark. With over 2.5 million attendees this season, the league’s success is attributed to stars like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink. Future momentum is expected as college standouts like Hannah Hidalgo and Azzy Fudd prepare to enter the draft.

Human Limits: The Breath-Holding Record

Croatian freediver Vedomir Maricic has redefined human physical limits by holding his breath for 29 minutes and 3 seconds. This achievement shattered previous records and effectively doubled the capacity of a bottlenose dolphin. Maricic utilized medically supervised pure oxygen prior to the attempt, a practice experts warn is "dangerous to do without a doctor present." Maricic noted that his primary goal was to "raise awareness for the ocean conservation organization known as Sea Shepherds."

The Kicker: A Lesson in Respecting Nature

In a cautionary tale from Florida, a man named Sean Mucey attempted to take a photo with a six-foot lemon shark before releasing it. The shark, clearly unimpressed by the "photo op," turned and bit Mucey on the leg, necessitating a helicopter evacuation. The local fire chief offered a blunt assessment of the incident: "When you push on Mother Nature, she'll push back."

Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Kim.
Today is Monday, August 25th, 2025. And we begin with a new kind of animal being pressed into the search and rescue business.
For the first time ever, an otter is in training.
His name is Splash, and his job is to pick up where dogs leave off, namely at the water's edge.
As Florida rescue expert and trainer Mike Hadsall explains, otters don't smell smells underwater.
They taste them. You'll see all these bubbles coming out, and he's sucking some of those bubbles back in, he told Popular Science.
