Good morning and welcome to KidNews, I'm Tory.
Today is Friday, May 23, 2025.
The start of the long Memorial Day weekend.
And we begin with a group of Minnesota teens with muddy boots and big goals tackling climate anxiety.
The Green Crew is a youth led team fighting their eco worries by jumping into action, planting trees, fixing up trails, and removing invasive species.
It started a few years ago when then thirteen year old Hannah Baresanzi decided to turn her climate stress into something useful.
Now, about fifty high school students are running projects making a real difference and enlisting thousands of participants to help.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, scientists in Antarctica have discovered that penguin poop, yes, poop, is helping fight climate change.
According to ABC News, chemical reactions between ammonia in the poop and sulphur gases from ocean creatures lead to cloud formation, which reduces earthly temperatures and the melting of sea ice.
Music Cereal might still be the go -to breakfast for kids across America, but a study says what's in the bowl might be a big nutrition bummer.
According to research published this week in JAMA Network Open, many of the cereals hitting store shelves today have more fat sugar and salt than they did just a few years ago.
From 2010 to 2023, the fat content of newly introduced cereals jumped nearly 34 percent, sodium went up by 32 percent, and sugar increased by almost 11 percent.
One of the study's authors also warns that some cereals may say they're healthy on the front, but nutrition labels on the back tell a different story.
According to the U .S. Department of Agriculture, about a third of U .S. kids start their day with cereal.
Hollywood still sparkles, but fewer tourists are showing up to see it.
Experts say things like wildfires at higher costs are keeping some travelers away, especially those from other countries.
Los Angeles still had millions of visitors last year, but not as many as it used to, and that's costing the city big time.
Even though lots of major events are coming to the area in the next two years like the Super Bowl, the World Cup, and the NBA All -Star Game, which should be great for business, some worry the city won't be ready or able to make the most of those huge crowds, including the big one, the 2028 Summer Olympics.
It may have taken 143 ,000 people more than a month and a half to do it, but it's still considered remarkable.
Working together, they brought the world's number one chess player to a draw.
The online event was called Magnus Carlsen vs the World and it started on April 4.
Magnus played white while the masses voted on each opposing move.
The grand master and five -time world champion started off strong and was heavily favored.
But he made some small mistakes that his online foes took advantage of.
After 46 days and 32 moves, the contest ended without a winner.
Magnus might not have gotten the victory, but he did set a record. The 143 ,000 people who showed up to face him were the most ever for an online match. CLOWN FISH Clown fish, those little orange and white fish that look just like Nemo, are doing something pretty wild to beat the heat.
They're shrinking! Scientists studying clown fish in Papua New Guinea during a major 2023 ocean heatwave found that some of them got smaller, which may help them survive environmental stress.
Researchers aren't exactly sure how they're pulling it off, but they think the fish might be reabsorbing some of their own bone matter.
This phenomenon isn't entirely new.
Marine iguanas have been known to shrink themselves during El Niño weather patterns in the Galapagos.
But it's the first time this kind of shrinking has been documented in coral reef fish.
Still to come, the Mint makes it official.
The penny will soon be a thing of the past. But first, our KidNews team would like to wish Ruby and Lily Gold of Kilauea, Hawaii good luck this weekend as they rock the Global Games Cheer competition.
Your mom, dad, and little brother Wade are so proud of you and all of the hard work you both have put in this season and will be there to cheer you on.
Good luck Island Elite S2 FHP Ohana IE.
Congrats on a great season and hit 0.
Now, today's kid news quiz.
What hidden ingredients make some cereals less healthy than they seem?
Added sugar, salt, and fat.
How does penguin poop help fight climate change?
By helping to form more clouds.
Why are clownfish shrinking during ocean heat waves?
To help them survive environmental stress.
Why are fewer tourists spending money in Los Angeles?
Wildfires, and higher costs.
In today's Kid News Kicker, as we first reported months ago, the penny's long run is coming to an end.
Yesterday, the U .S. Mint placed its last order of penny blanks and said it will stop producing new ones when those run out.
Each penny now costs nearly four cents to make.
The decision follows years of debate and comes after President Trump called the coin wasteful earlier this year.
The move to pinch the penny is expected to save the government $56 million a year.
Even after production stops, existing pennies will remain legal to use, though they'll likely become less common over time.
It might take a minute, though.
there are currently 114 billion of them in circulation.
Thanks again to The Gold Ohana, which I'm told means family in Hawaiian, of Kilauea, Hawaii for sponsoring today's quiz and a big shout out for Ruby, Lily, and all their island elite teammates as they take the Global Games Cheer competition by storm this weekend.
Best of luck from all of us at Kid News.
