Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, February 13th, 2025, and we begin with a big treat for a big dog at America's most iconic dog show.
Monty the Giant Schnauzer took best in show Tuesday night at this year's Westminster Kennel Club dog show.
The 149th running of the prestigious U .S.
Canine competition wagged its way through New York City's Madison Square Garden, where, according to the New York Times, five -year -old Monty from New Jersey and handler Kate Bernadin challenged roughly 2 ,500 pampered pooches over three days of competition.
After winning Best in Breed and Best in Group honors, Monty then beat out six other dogs for Best in Show, including runner -up Bourbon the whip it.
Monty is the first giant schnauzer ever to win best in show, and according to Bernadin, always tries so hard.
I'm just so proud of him, he never stops.
And it's a good thing he doesn't.
It took Monty three tries at Westminster before he finally staked his claim to the silver bowl and oversized purple and yellow winner's ribbon.
If you're coughing and sneezing right now, you're certainly not alone.
43 states, up from 15, are now reporting high or very high rates of the flu.
And according to the New York Times, there's no sign of a let -up.
The CDC estimates there have been at least 24 million cases this year, with some outbreaks, including one in Fort Worth, Texas, causing school districts to close for a few days.
Experts aren't sure why this flu season is so much worse than usual, but say it could be this strain is more intense.
And fewer people are taking precautions, such as wearing masks and getting vaccinated.
But it's not too late.
Flu season runs through May.
In the meantime, doctors recommend washing hands and refraining from touching your mouth, nose, and eyes to help prevent the spread.
If you can get outside in this wintry weather, you might get a glimpse of the snow moon.
The second full moon of 2025, named by Native American tribes for winter's heavy snowfall, is at its peak this week.
According to Time Magazine, the snow moon can be seen with the naked eye above the horizon around sunset and at its highest point around midnight, especially in areas with low light.
Also in the sky this week, keep an eye out for Venus, the planet named after the Roman goddess of Love, which reaches peak brightness tomorrow on Valentine's Day.
It's like Beatlemania all over again.
Throngs of New Yorkers started sprinting toward the Bowery Tuesday when word broke that Sir Paul McCartney was about to headline a surprise pop -up concert.
The last time he played in the Big Apple, it was to a crowd of 82 ,000.
This time, only 500 of the very luckiest people would make it inside the tiny Bowery ballroom.
Those quick enough to snag a ticket at the door were almost in shock, and that extended to Sir Paul himself, who told the crowd, I can't quite believe we're here doing this, but we are here doing this.
He then launched into his biggest Beatles and Wings hits, including A Hard Day's Night, Maybe I'm Amazed, Jet and Get Back.
One concertgoer let out a particularly familiar sound.
That was a Beatles scream, he said.
Okay, let's get it out of the way.
Girls, give me a Beatles scream.
All in attendance, obliged.
Mr. McCartney apparently enjoyed the performance as much as those who hoofed it to the Bowery in a hurry because yesterday he announced another pop -up for last night.
With football firmly in the rearview mirror, basketball's bonanza is headed to the bay.
NBA All -Star Weekend is taking over San Francisco the next three days, with events expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to the region.
The Golden State Warriors will host the big game Sunday at their home arena, the Chase Center, while the Oakland Arena, Moscone Center, and Pier 48 will also feature attractions for fans.
Among the NBA favorites in the lineup, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, LeBron James, and Victor Wimbanyama.
Still ahead, you may get the chance to share your pillow with a pet, but first, today's Kid News Quiz.
