Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, February 6, 2025.
And we begin with a parade of storms bearing down in the eastern half of the U .S.
and proving Punxsutawney Phil may have been on the mark.
According to forecasters, as many as three significant back -to -back winter weather systems will hit over the next few days, the first already bringing ice and snow to millions of people across more than a dozen states in the Midwest and Northeast.
The first two are expected to bring substantial amounts of freezing rain, which can lead to dangerous road and sidewalk conditions, while the third will be mostly snow.
A winter storm watch issued for parts of west -central Pennsylvania says travel could be nearly impossible.
The West Coast is confronting its own set of storms with the National Weather Service warning of heavy rain with a risk of flooding as well as heavy snow in the Sierras, Southern Cascades, and Northern Rockies through tomorrow.
The Kansas City Chiefs may have two Super Bowl rings, but their opponents have the size.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line is the absolute biggest in the history of the game.
Offensive linemen are typically large, but nothing compared to the five ginormous players who will be suiting up in green Sunday.
On average, they stand six foot six and weigh 338 pounds.
That's more than an inch taller and 26 pounds heavier than the Chiefs O -Line.
The two biggest are six foot eight, 365 pound Jordan Mailata, a former rugby player from Australia, and Mekhi Becton, who at six foot 7 and 363 pounds down from a high of 400 is often called Big Ticket or Mount Becton.
I like unusual players, said Eagles line coach Jeff Stoutland.
I put two or three or four guys next to each other like that, then how the heck are you going to squeak your way through?
Should I stay or should I go?
That's the question many federal government employees, from correctional officers to transportation workers to public health officials are asking after receiving an email from the Trump administration urging them to leave their jobs but get paid through September if they do so by the end of today.
The subject line, called Fork in the Road, was the same Elon Musk used to offer buyouts to employees when he took over Twitter and is reportedly part of an effort by the government to restructure and streamline operations.
According to Axios, as of yesterday, about 20 ,000 employees, or about 1 to 2 percent of the federal workforce, had accepted the offer.
But the unions that represent them were discouraging it.
They, along with other critics, argue the offer may be illegal, and because Congress has not authorized it, there's no guarantee the workers will actually get paid.
The Waffle House is scrambling to keep up with rising egg prices.
The breakfast chain says it's adding a $0 .50 per egg surcharge to its menu items due to the avian flu outbreak that has cracked the nation's egg supply and jacked up prices.
According to CNBC, a dozen eggs averaged $4 .15 nationwide in December, but now ranges from $7 in the Midwest to as high as $12 in New York City, with some grocery stores limiting how many cartons customers can buy.
The Department of Agriculture says there's no end in sight and predicts another 20 percent jump in egg prices this year, which could make for a more expensive Easter.
A new trend that comes with bragging rights is popping up at U .S.
ski resorts. Earning your turns, or uphilling, has skiers bypassing lifts and gondolas in favor of climbing the mountain on their own.
According to CNN, the practice often requires special bindings and boots paired with skins, a fabric placed on the bottom of skis to give them traction.
Some skiers take off their skis and put their gear on their backs and hike up.
Uphilling used to be a challenge backcountry skiers took to search for pristine untouched snow, but this less extreme fitness -oriented version has prompted many resorts to designate special routes and hours when skiers can trek up the mountain and work up a sweat before speeding down the slopes.
Still ahead, there's no sugarcoating the competition at the Pastry World Cup.
But first, Elizabeth, Jay, Will, and Archie want to wish Cece McCormick of Lafayette, Louisiana, a very happy ninth birthday today.
They tell us she loves volleyball, ballet, reading, baking, being outside, cooking, crafting, spending time with her family and her faith.
Happy birthday, ACC, we hope you have the best day.
