Good morning and welcome to Kid News.
I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, January 23, 2025.
And we begin with reaction coming in hot as baseball standout Ichiro Suzuki becomes the first ever Japanese -born player inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, one vote shy of unanimous.
Suzuki received a thumbs up from 99 .7 percent of the baseball writers, and according to USA Today, that one last anonymous holdout is getting no love from social media with fans and sports writers posting, shame, shame, shame, and out yourself.
Who didn't vote for Ichiro and why?
Suzuki earned 3 ,089 hits and stole 509 bases in his 19 -year career, most of which was spent with the Seattle Mariners.
He also won MVP, Rookie of the Year, 10 Golden Gloves, 3 Silver Sluggers and holds the all -time record for hits in a single season with 262 in 2004.
Suzuki joins Derek Jeter in missing a unanimous induction, leaving pitcher Mariano Rivera of the Yankees as the one and only player to hold that honor.
Southerners are breaking out the boogie boards, not for the water, but for the sand.
Most don't own sleds down there, there's no need.
But when snow piled up on beaches from Texas to the Carolinas yesterday, improvisation, sometimes with yoga mats or laundry baskets, was the way to slay.
The record -setting storm that blew through the South dumped historic amounts of snow in places that don't normally see it.
8 .8 inches in Milton, Florida, setting a new all -time high for the state, 10 inches in New Orleans, 7 .6 inches in Mobile, Alabama, 4 inches in Houston, and 4 inches in Charleston, South Carolina.
It's like something out of a Star Wars movie.
Scientists have discovered a new supergiant sea bug species that has a head resembling the helmet worn by Darth Vader.
According to the journal Zoo Keys, fishermen who caught the bug, now called Bithynimus videri for Vader, were deep -sea trawling in the South China Sea off the coast of Vietnam.
The big bugs are bottom dwellers whose massive size is believed to aid their survival by providing a competitive advantage over other smaller scavengers.
The biggest bevideri specimen found measured 12 .8 inches long and weighed 2 .2 pounds, making it one of the largest known isopods, a type of crustacean that includes the much smaller Roly -Poly.
It almost didn't make it to the big screen, but good thing it did because Moana 2 is now a billion -dollar box office hit.
The animated sequel has generated more than $1 billion globally just eight weekends into its November 28th release.
The movie is Disney's third 2024 hit to cross a billion after Inside Out 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine.
Moana 2 was originally created as a series for Disney +, before it was redesigned into a feature -length film.
The original Moana made $680 million in theaters, but exploded on Disney +, where it is now one of the most -watched streaming movies.
According to Variety Magazine, Moana 2's success means Moana 3 likely won't be far off.
A Jonas Brothers Crumble cookie collab may not have been on your 2025 bingo card, but it's here nonetheless.
On Monday, Crumble launched its limited -time release with the pop band, calling it Rob's Backstage Caramel Popcorn Cookie, named for a popcorn recipe created by the father of their former guitarist.
Joe, Kevin, and Nick shared their sweet new hit in a video on Crumble's Instagram, showing the trio attempting to decorate the buttery cookies with creamy caramel frosting and pieces of popcorn covered in caramel drizzle.
According to People magazine, the cookie comes in large and many sizes and is only available through Saturday.
Speaking of crumble, that seems to be what's happening to the medals from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
According to the New York Times, more than 100 athletes have asked for their tarnished and flaking medals to be replaced.
Some, including U .S.
Olympic fencer Nick Itkin said they started to deteriorate a few days after closing ceremonies.
Even more surprising, the medals were designed by the French Mint along with Louis Vuitton's LVMH, a famous French luxury brand and the biggest corporate sponsor of the Games.
Designers say each medal took 15 days to complete, from stamping out the image to dipping it in gold, bronze, and silver and finishing it with a coat of varnish.
That varnish is the issue, according to the International Olympic Committee.
The IOC has apologized and says it will order new ones.
Still ahead, a lot of extra travel for a cargo kitty.
But first, we want to send big double -digit birthday wishes to Eva Chen of San Mateo, California.
Eva, your mom and dad are so proud of you and they hope your eyes always shine bright and your heart is filled with love.
And a Kid News shoutout to all the 4th graders at College Park, especially Ms.

You guys rock! Now today's Kid News Quiz.

In today's Kid News kicker, a household cat accidentally became a frequent flying feline last week, making three trips between New Zealand and Australia in just 24 hours.
Eight -year -old Mittens was booked on a one -way flight with her humans, the Knees family, from Christchurch to their new home in Melbourne, when the family got some bad news at baggage claim.
Mittens' cage was overlooked by cargo handlers, and she was headed all the way back to New Zealand.
The pilot received word of the extra passenger and adjusted the temperature to make Mittens comfortable.
After the seven -and -a -half -hour flight, Cruz got her on another one back to Australia where she was eventually reunited with her family.
Air New Zealand is reimbursing all costs associated with Mittens travel and has apologized to the family.
Margo Knees says Mittens is not usually an affectionate pet but is the cuddliest she's ever been and gets as much attention as she wants right now because they're so relieved to have her back.
Thanks again to the Chens of San Mateo, California for sponsoring today's quiz and happy 10th birthday to Eva.
We hope it's the best day ever.
