Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
Today's podcast is brought to you by you.
I'm going to introduce several of you who have left comments on iTunes at the end of today's podcast. Today's expression is a phrasal verb.
If you do not know this verb, you don't know English.
To hang out. To hang out.
H -A -N -G -O -U -T. Let's hang out on Friday.
Okay. Some students, when they want to be with their friends on Friday night, they want to meet, maybe go shopping, go to a restaurant, go to a movie.
They want to go do something, go drinking, go dancing.
Some students like to use the verb play.
Hey, let's play on Friday !" No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Not in English.
Do not use the word play especially as an adult.
If you say play, it refers to a game.
It sounds a little childish.
Now, if you want to play soccer, or you want to play a board game, or if you want to play a video game, That's okay, but if you want to meet your friends, have some pizza, and talk, and do something, in that case, don't say play, say hang out.
Let's hang out. You got it?
Very important. Let's check out the dialogue.
Let's hang out at the mall today.
Oh, why? Let's just hang out at home.
Home is boring. The mall is the same, staring at people and eating junk food.
Boring. Stairbucks?
Okay. Yeah. Where do you like to hang out?
Do you like to hang out at the mall?
M -A -L -L, the shopping mall, where all the stores are, all the restaurants, all the people?
Lots of young kids love to hang out at the mall.
When I was young, we didn't have a mall.
There was no shopping mall.
I lived in the country.
We used to hang out in the woods with the bears and the deer.
I'm serious, we did.
What about you though, where do you hang out?
Do you hang out at the mall?
Do you hang out at home?
Do you hang out at the office?
Oh, that's boring. Do you hang out at Starbucks?
Nowadays, if I hang out where do I hang out?
Oh boy, um Nowhere.
Yeah, I'm a home all the time if I could I guarantee you there's a lake not too far from me and you can go fishing on that lake and if I could And that's where I would hang out.
I would be hanging out at the lake.
By myself or with my friends or with my family, doesn't matter, that's where I would spend my time.
I would go fishing sometimes, sometimes I might go exercising, sometimes I might just sit and look at the water, watch the birds, and enjoy being in nature.
That's the idea of hanging out.
Especially meeting your friends and doing something, chatting, having coffee, eating dinner, watching a movie, dancing, drinking.
Tell me, where do you like to hang out?
Let's hang out at the mall today!
