If you love watching movies to learn English and you need to learn some new English phrases, this lesson is for you.
In today's English lesson, I'll teach you 14 phrases that come from English speaking movies that English speakers say in their everyday conversations.
These 14 phrases are some of the most important ones that we get from movies, and they're really fun to learn how to use as well.
So let's get started. You're going to master these 14 phrases in today's lesson, and you'll hear English speakers use them all the time.
The first phrase is, may the odds ever be in your favor.
This phrase comes from the movies Hunger Games.
And in the Hunger Games, the contestants are, of course, competing to be the last ones surviving, and it's kind of a dark... series or if you haven't read the books, definitely check those out because they are meant for a younger audience.
But the books are really good for practicing your English as well and picking up new phrases through there.
So you can read the books or the movies, but we use this phrase kind of to jokingly wish someone luck because obviously the phrase comes from a really dark thing, like she's wishing them luck in surviving and not getting killed.
But maybe you just say to your friend, you know, they have a test on Friday and...
The test is going to be hard, and so you say, well, may the odds ever be in your favor.
This means good luck. may the odds be ever in your favor may the odds be ever in your favor i'll be back So this phrase, I'll be back, you definitely have to say in your best Arnold Schwarzenegger accent. accent, Austrian accent.
So one thing about Arnold Schwarzenegger is he is most famous for having a foreign accent.
And English speakers really love to try to imitate it, even though we don't do a good job.
So in the movie, The Terminator, it's an old movie.
You know, he says he'll be back, and when he's back, crashes a car you know it's kind of a threat like I will be back so we often say this in English again more jokingly like if we lost or We're going to come back and, you know,
Be back soon, we'll just say in a funny way, I'll be back.
So you have to say it with the accent here, which is kind of funny.
And this is why American English speakers say it because it's just such an iconic phrase.
It's an iconic line from the movie The Terminator.
We get a ton of different phrases from the classic movie, The Wizard of Oz.
In The Wizard of Oz, you've probably seen it, Dorothy crashes into Oz, into Munchkin Land, And she looks around, you know, it's so colorful and it's a fantasy world.
And she says, we're not in Kansas anymore.
I guess we're not in Kansas anymore. I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.
So Kansas is a state in the United States and you know it's saying like when we use this phrase that We're in a new, unfamiliar situation.
We're not in our comfort zone anymore. We actually use this phrase quite a bit in other television shows and other movies. just to mean like things have changed and this is not going to be what we're used for.
We're not in Kansas anymore. you are not in kansas anymore or not in kansas anymore if you haven't seen the movie jerry mcguire It's honestly a classic movie and it's got Tom Cruise and it's just, you know, it's a romantic movie and it's very funny.
In the movie, he says, you had me at hello.
This is a really cheesy, romantic line in the movie.
You had me in love with you when you said hello from the very beginning.
You had me at hello. You had me at hello.
So we use this phrase in English when we want to say that we were convinced right away, like something sounds like a really good plan or a really appealing idea.
So your friend might say to you, they have donuts at that restaurant.
You could say, well, they have me at Hello.
That means let's go. It doesn't take any convincing for me.
Or sometimes we replace the word with donuts or whatever it might be that convinced us.
We can say, you had me at donuts, let's go.
So we use this phrase all of the time and we kind of switch up saying you had me at hello or you had me at donuts or...
You had me at free food, whatever it might be that convinces you.
Just shut up. You had me at hello. You might have heard this English phrase and not known it comes from a movie.
I kind of knew it probably came from a movie and came from the idea of going into space, but I didn't know it actually came from the movie Apollo 13.
The phrase is, Houston, we have a problem.
So NASA headquarters in the movie are located in Houston, And so when they are talking to the headquarters and they're telling them they have a problem, they address it as the city.
They say, Houston, we have a problem. And English speakers say this kind of sarcastically and like in a joking way to say, you know, we have a technical problem usually.
So If you are about to give a presentation and your computer's not loading, maybe it's giving you the spinning wheel of death, you might jokingly say to the room you're presenting to, sorry, Houston, we have a problem here.
And people usually laugh. They usually know you're kind of joking when you say this because it's not like you're talking to NASA.
You're just talking to your friends or your colleagues.
Houston, we have a problem. Houston, we have a problem.
Now this next phrase comes from the movie Scarface, which of course is incredibly violent and pretty vulgar of a movie.
But people say this phrase all of the time and it kind of is funny to say because usually we're saying this in life in situations that are not vulgar or violent when we say, say hello to my little friend.
We're going to show something that's impressive.
So in the movie Scarface, he is about to show his gun, his weapon.
And in real life, when we use this phrase, you know, we're going to show them something that's impressive.
Say hello to my little friend. So let's pretend we have a big pizza we're about to eat.
We might hold it up and say, say hello to my little friend.
So again, this phrase, it's pretty funny when people say it in the right context.
It's not at all used like it is used in the movie.
Let's talk about a phrase that comes from the classic Disney movie Toy Story.
The phrase is to infinity and beyond. To infinity and beyond.
So this phrase is used by Buzz Lightyear in the movie because you know, he's very positive.
He's very optimistic. He's saying like, yes, we can do it to infinity and beyond.
So sometimes people use this in real life, you know, to say like, let's go, we can do it. you're really optimistic about something.
The context of this phrase in the movie, he's talking about going to space, you know, going into space.
And in real life, we just talk about, you know, let's go do a project.
Let's go clean the house to infinity. beyond to infinity and beyond You may have missed the classic movie Top Gun with Tom Cruise.
Go back and watch it or They made another movie following up recently with Miles Teller and Tom Cruise called Top Gun.
And it's about fighter pilots and the United States military.
And of course, fighter jets go incredibly fast.
And so in the movie, you know, it's Kind of a cheesy movie.
There's some romance in it. There's some funny lines.
There's some more serious parts as well.
When the main characters, Maverick and Goose, that's their flight names, they are about to go in the air in their fighter jets, they say to each other, I feel the need.
And the other one says, I feel the need for speed.
So I feel the need, the need for speed. This just means we're about to do something kind of extreme or to go fast.
Maybe you want to drive fast in your car.
So you say, hey, let's take the interstate.
I feel the need, the need for speed. So you're quoting this famous movie and you're just saying, you know, we're going to go fast.
We're going to do something extreme. The need for speed.
You've got a need for speed. To be honest, when doing research for this video, I did not know this phrase came from a movie because it is so commonly used in American English.
The phrase or the saying is keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer.
Apparently this comes from The Godfather, The Godfather 2 specifically.
I've never watched this full series of movies.
They're very long. They're older films, but I've heard they're incredibly well made.
And in the movie, you know, they're doing... mafia-related activity, gang-related activity.
So to keep your friends close and to keep your enemies close closer, you can tell the meaning exactly by the phrase.
You might not trust someone, but it's important to keep an eye on them, which means to kind of watch what they're doing to make sure they're not going to do something that's an attack on you.
He taught me, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.
So keep your friends close and keep your enemies closer.
Have you ever heard someone say, I see dead people?
When this is used not in the context of the movie, it's super confusing.
In the movie The Sixth Sense, I'm going to ruin the movie a little bit for you, But the child says, I see dead people, and he really can see dead people.
But in real English conversation, we just kind of say this phrase as a joke to say, you know, something's very creepy going on.
If you haven't seen The Sixth Sense, It's a really, really good movie.
It's a little creepy and suspenseful, but it's not, I wouldn't consider a horror movie.
It's not terrible, gory, or bloody. So it's a really good movie to watch, and it makes us say the phrase, I see dead people, when we're kind of joking that a situation can be kind of creepy.
Arnold Schwarzenegger again, he gives us a lot of famous phrases. from the terminator another one of his you know catchphrases has common things that he says and the terminator is hasta la vista baby Hasta la vista, baby.
This is used now in English to humorously say goodbye. apologize for my terrible Arnold Schwarzenegger impression, my terrible Austrian accent here, but we just say this when we're actually excited to leave.
Hasta la vista, baby. I get to leave work.
So, you know, it's such a dramatic feeling. phrase in the movie that in real life we just use this when we're excited to leave somewhere and we want to kind of make a joke of using the phrase from the movie.
Hasta la vista, baby. You talking to me?
In the movie Taxi Driver, the character looks in the mirror, and he's kind of pretending to have a confrontation with himself.
Even though, you know, he's just pretending.
He's just in the mirror. He's trying to prepare himself.
But we say this phrase now in English. You talking to me? to kind of joke like, are we having a fight?
Are we having confrontation? Or like, can say this like you wouldn't say that to me because you're saying that with an attitude or you're saying it in kind of a rude or aggressive manner you talking to me you talking to me You talking to me?
You talking to me? You talking to me? You talkin' to me?
Finally... This wouldn't be an iconic movie phrases lesson without mentioning this phrase from the Titanic.
The Titanic is honestly such an iconic movie here in the United States.
It's still very popular to this day. And in the movie, Leonardo DiCaprio, who is Jack in the film, is on the front of the boat holding his arms out saying, I'm king of the world.
So oftentimes, English speakers just kind of say this or yell this when we feel powerful, when we feel like something really exciting is happening.
So if you finish a big project or let's say you got your paycheck and you're really excited, you can say, oh, I'm king of the world.
Yes. So it's again, a very dramatic, just, you know, kind of comedic phrase to say, you know, we're excited, we're happy, we're overjoyed and we feel powerful.
