📋 Summary

The 12 Commandments of High-Converting Copywriting

In the world of paid advertising, where millions of dollars are spent annually, the difference between a failing campaign and a profitable one often comes down to the nuances of your copy. Drawing from years of experience and internal testing, here are the 12 essential hacks for writing persuasive copy that converts.

1. Headlines Come First

As David Ogilvy famously noted, the headline represents 80 cents of your advertising dollar. Because the "law of small numbers" dictates that small improvements in click-through rates (CTR) lead to exponential gains downstream, you must obsess over the hook. Use curiosity, target emotional outcomes, and remember: all ads have headlines—you simply have to choose whether yours will be good or bad.

2. Say What Only You Can Say

In an era of AI, your unique story and experiences are your greatest moat. "Proof will always outdo promise." By highlighting your unique background or specific results, you build trust that cannot be replicated by generic templates or AI avatars.

3. Identify and Polarize Your Audience

Don't try to be everything to everyone. Clearly define who you are looking for, and more importantly, who you are not looking for. Specificity creates a sense of "How does he know my secrets?" which lowers the action threshold for the right customer.

4. Always Have a 'Reason Why'

Human psychology is wired to accept requests more readily if a reason is provided, even if that reason is arbitrary. Use the word "because" to justify your call to action. A confused mind does not buy; a clear reason moves the prospect to the next step.

5. Utilize Damaging Admissions

Owning your flaws is one of the most powerful ways to build trust. By using the "Statement A (truth/flaw) BUT Statement B (benefit)" structure, you disarm the reader's skepticism. When you admit your product isn't perfect, you gain the credibility needed to make your bold claims believable.

6. Show, Don't Tell

Avoid generic marketing jargon like "get more sales." Instead, describe the experience of success. Paint a picture of the moments your prospect will encounter—the overflowing order forms or the crowded gym. Specificity creates an emotional connection that abstract promises cannot.

7. Tie Benefits to Status

Beyond mere features, humans are driven by the desire for status within their social groups. Frame your benefits in a way that shows how the prospect will be perceived by their friends, family, or rivals. Status is the ultimate psychological lever.

8. Master Urgency and Scarcity

Scarcity (quantity) and urgency (time) are tools to decrease the action threshold. The secret is that they must be legitimate. If you set a limit, stick to it. This builds a reputation that makes your future offers even more powerful.

9. Implied Authority

Leverage credentials, longevity, and social proof to establish yourself as an authority. Whether it's the number of clients served or specific awards, these markers signal to the prospect that you are a legitimate expert worth listening to.

10. The Power of the PS Statement

After the headline, the PS (and PPS) statement is the most read part of your copy. Use it to recap your main argument, add a final call to action, or provide a disclaimer about who the offer is for. It is your final opportunity to convert a reader who skipped straight to the bottom.

11. Clear Calls to Action (CTA)

Never leave a prospect guessing. Tell them exactly what to do next. By outlining the steps and fulfilling your promises (say-do correspondence), you build a feedback loop of influence. When your instructions lead to the promised outcome, you gain the authority to lead them again.

12. Aim for a Third-Grade Reading Level

Complexity is the enemy of conversion. Fancy language creates friction. Use short sentences, simple words, and direct verbs. If the reader has to pause to understand your copy, you have already lost them. Simplicity equals sales.

Bonus: The Power of Humor If you want to add "extra sauce," use humor. While the other 12 rules are foundational for conversion, humor allows you to go broad. By testing material—just as a comedian does—you can create copy that both educates and entertains, making your message significantly more memorable.
