To loom large. Something is looming large.
L-O-O-M. L-A-R-G-E. Two words, it's a phrase to loom large.
This is a great expression and many times it's used in kind of a negative or scary or ominous kind of atmosphere.
I want you to listen to the dialogue and then I'll explain exactly what this great phrase to loom large means.
Check out the dialogue.
You need to relax, it's your vacation.
How can I? My IELTS exam looms large.
Well, have another beer.
Yeah, getting drunk will help me forget.
Sounds like dumb and dumber having a conversation.
Oh, but did you hear it? So the dialogue, you need to relax, it's your vacation.
Yes, that's a good idea.
If you are on vacation, you should relax.
But the other guy says, how can I?
In other words, I can't.
Why? My IELTS exam looms large.
The IELTS exam. The IELTS exam is that university exam, essentially very similar to the TOEFL exam, if you know the TOEFL exam, the IELTS exam.
Same type of thing. Very difficult test.
The IELTS exam is very important if you want to study, for example, British University at a foreign school.
If you want to study at a college in a different country, you may have to take the IELTS exam.
So it's a very important test.
That's why the guy can't relax.
It's his vacation, but his IELTS exam looms large.
Now, what does looms large mean?
It means is near, is getting closer.
And the idea of this expression is there's a shadow, S-H-A-D-O-W.
There's a dark shadow, and it's getting closer and closer and closer to you.
A dark shadow from above, this darkness is getting closer and closer and closer.
And finally, when it arrives, dun dun dun, it's usually something difficult like an exam.
It's perfect to use for an exam.
So again, the situation, you need to relax.
It's your vacation. How can I?
My IELTS exam looms large.
The other guy says, we'll have another beer.
And then the guy says, yeah, getting drunk will help me forget.
It's a good idea. I don't know if that's a good idea.
But maybe it is. What about for you?
Does anything loom large?
Is anything looming large for you?
Anything important, but maybe difficult?
Maybe like a test, something like that?
For me, what is looming large?
Let me think. Well, I could say, you know, I'm not getting any younger.
And you know, it's a couple months until my birthday, but this year I'll be older.
I'll be, oh my God, I'll be 57?
So my 57th birthday is looming large.
Can you believe it? Oh, that must be that must be 37.
Yes, my 37th birthday is coming up.
Yay. But if it were my 57th birthday, I probably wouldn't be so happy and I would probably say, oh, my 57th birthday is looming large.
Dun dun dun. I hope nothing is looming large for you.
And if there is something looming large, I hope that it's no problem and it's a pleasant event.
That's today's expression.
This is a great expression.
It may be difficult to use, but I want you to start listening carefully to podcasts and the news and check out the internet headlines and you will probably see this expression.
That's it. Check out the dialogue a couple more times.
And together, let's master English.
