Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to DailyEasyEnglishExpressions, the Budgast.
This is number 1888. Thank you very much for joining me.
We've got a very good expression for you.
It's a phrasal verb. It is to get by.
To get by. Get G-E-T. By B-Y.
So how do you get by? Now this expression can mean, for example, I could ask you, you're studying English.
How are you getting by? How are you getting by?
Do you think that means?
Or I could be talking about your life.
How are you getting by? How are you getting by?
Or we could be talking about money, specifically money.
Do you have enough to get by?
Do you have enough to get by?
So what does this get by actually mean?
I'll explain after you check out the dialogue.

Just barely. Is it that tough?
Yeah. Everything's so expensive.
It's true. Like I said, it's 2023.
COVID is basically done, but the world is still recovering and the economy.
It's a tough situation.
Not just in the United States and many, many countries around the world.
I hope things are going to get better, right?
So how are you getting by the keyword here?
The meaning of get by is survive.
That's the idea. Survive.
S-U-R-V-I-V-E. So specifically in this dialogue, how are you getting by?
How are you surviving? You know you're welfare, you're eating and everything, you're lifestyle.
How are you doing? The guy says just barely.
In other words, I'm just barely getting by.
Meaning it's very difficult.
It is a struggle. Surviving is not easy.
So the guy says, is it that tough?
Is it that difficult? Is it that hard?
Oh, really? Life is tough.
And the guy says, yeah, everything is so expensive.
It's true. I think is so expensive.
I'll tell you it. For my business personally, this is personal information.
Basically, I have not increased prices since COVID started.
And that's, I can't do that anymore.
Because since COVID started, everything else has become so much more expensive.
So basically this dialogue is me.
I'm just getting by. Yeah, so it's tough.
It's tough for everyone.

I want you to thrive. I want you to do great.
So if I ask you, you're studying English, how are you getting by?
It's OK. How are you surviving?
Well, not really. How are you learning?
How are you advancing? Are you doing well?
Are you learning a lot? Are you fixing your pronunciation?
Are you building your confidence?
All of those questions fit inside get by.
Oh, you're studying English.
How are you getting by? It's OK.
I'm still having problems with pronunciation.
That's a possible answer.
Yeah, it's a great one. To get by, to survive, to be doing something or living through something that's kind of difficult, but you're doing your best.
You're not quitting. You're doing your best.
The economy is difficult.
Are you able to deal with that situation?
Studying English is not easy.
Are you able to learn? Are you able to overcome some of those problems?
My income is $10 an hour.
That is not enough to get by in the United States.
$10 an hour is not enough to survive.
I mean, with a family. If you have a family, a wife, or a husband, a child, two kids maybe, and your income is only $10 an hour, that's not enough to survive.
That's not enough to get by.
You need to do better in the United States anyway.
In some countries, $10 an hour is great, but not in America.
