Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
This is number 1,030 and I'm happy to say I have another shout out.
This hello goes to Andresa Nunes.
Andresa says, I've learned so much English with your podcasts.
I love it.
I'm Brazilian.
Every day I listen to your podcasts.
Please say hi to me.
I admire your work.
Hello Andresa.
If you're from Brazil, I can say, Obregado.
Thank you very much for listening to our lessons.
I really appreciate that.
Tell your friends, join our classes.
So Andresa, this expression is really an excellent one.
Maybe it applies to you.
It applies to many of my students.
Kicked my behind something or someone.
But in this situation, let's think something.
Kicked my behind.
So three words there.
Kicked KICED, myMY behind B-E-H-I-N-D.
So for example, my workout kicked my behind.
Workout means exercise routine.
My schedule is kicking my behind.
My schedule is kicking.
I changed it.
KICED, I-N-G is kicking my behind.
This new project will kick your behind.
Change it again, the verb, right?
And I changed the pronoun to the possessive pronoun to your.
This new project will kick your behind.
What does it mean if something kicks your behind?
It means it will make you very tired.
It will take all your energy, all your focus, all your concentration.
It will DE-P-L-E-T-E.
It will DE-P-L-E-T-E.
Sometimes we need to work on projects to exercise, to have a schedule that kicks our behind.
Don't we?
We do.
We absolutely do.
A tree grows strong if there's wind to blow it around.
If there's no wind, if there's no stress, the tree is going to be weak.
So we need stress in our lives, in our schedules, in our exercise routines, in our projects,
in our work, and sometimes even in our relationships, we need that stress to make us stronger.
But when that stress is really, really strong, it
kicks our behind.
And I'll explain exactly what kicked my behind the words, mean, after you check out the
dialogue.
Tim, you look tired.
I'm dead.
Shane kicked my behind.
You had a fight?
No.
He worked me really hard.
That's right.
Tim is one of my DDM VIP students.
And Tim, right now we have an off week.
If you're in DDM VIP, you know we have an off week.
And a lot of DDM VIP students are happy to have an off week.
No new lessons this week.
It's review and rest week.
We need this.
You need to let your brain relax.
But for the past three weeks, I gave Tim and all the other VIP members some tough assignments,
some very difficult assignments.
Assignments that really required some concentration, some extra work.
And Tim is one of the students who said, I'm so tired.
But I love it.
And Tim said he's tired, but he loves it.
He loves to be worked hard.
That's why I'm a coach.
I kicked Tim's behind.
Now I didn't actually physically with my foot kick his behind.
I mentally kicked his behind by giving him six assignments that were kind of tough.
So obviously we understand to kick my behind means to make me really tired, really take
all my energy.
What exactly is behind B-E-H-I-N-D?
It actually means your butt, B-U-T-T, what you sit on.
Right now I'm sitting on my behind.
My wife says I have a skinny behind.
Boney, maybe that's the better answer.
Yeah, your behind is your butt.
So if something kicks your behind, it kicks your butt.
Or we can even say it kicks your ass, ASS.
In the UK they say it kicks your arse, ARSE.
Yeah.
Lots of words for butt.
And we can use all of those words in this expression.
Oh my God, I took a test and it really kicked my ass.
It really was difficult.
It was really, really tough.
Okay, this is the idea.
Now, kicked your behind can also mean DEFIT you.
Okay, it can mean to DEFIT.
But in this case what I want you to focus on today is it didn't make you defeated, it
didn't DEFIT you, it just made you really tired.
These days my schedule is kicking my behind.
These days I'm volunteering.
I'm working at the radio station, local radio station.
And I have to wake up at 4am every day.
Be at work at 4.30 and that schedule is kicking my behind.
But it's not only kicking my behind, it's kicking my wife's behind because she has to put
the boys to bed and she has to be there when the boys wake up.
And usually we try to share that schedule a little bit but now it's all on her.
So that schedule is kicking our behind.
That's kicking our butts.
It's really tough.
But we'll survive.
Like I said, a tree needs strong winds to make it stronger, right?
So these days is anything kicking your behind?
Hopefully something's kicking your English behind.
