Now today's expression is great.
It is too riff, riff, R-I-F-F.
And to riff actually is a musical term.
It's common with guitarists, but not only guitarists, but typically rock guitarists when
they'll just suddenly play some really cool music.
It's usually a little bit fast.
It's really fun.
They are riffing.
They're practicing or even in a concert they might riff and play something not planned
or not written.
It's just kind of an improv, improvisation, just kind of making stuff up, usually for fun.
And typically in a concert people love it.
However, we also use riff in daily English when we're talking about something or somebody
and we start making some jokes about the subject.
So it's really common among comedians.
So you can imagine there's a talk show on TV and they start talking about something and
suddenly the comedian starts making jokes about a subject or a person and it wasn't planned.
He's just being natural.
He's basically doing improvisational comedy.
He's just making up jokes.
Now also sometimes we say to riff to mean casually talking, but again, usually the subject
is kind of funny.
So we're just riffing or let's riff about this.
It means let's talk about this.
Let's make some jokes about this and you'll hear this in like talk radio.
Maybe the DJ is talking about a politician and suddenly they just start making jokes
about the politician, about something they said or something they did.
This is the idea of to riff.
So I'm guessing for ESL students to use this verb might be a little bit difficult, you
know, knowing when to use it or how to use it.
However, if you start listening to American talk shows, American radio, YouTube videos where
there's a talk between more than one person, you're going to hear the word to riff to riff.
Okay, so it's a word that I want you to be familiar with.
It comes from music.
Basically, it means to just create something new in music and in conversation to create
jokes, usually about a subject or someone that is in the news these days.
This is the idea of to riff.
Okay, so it's a little bit complicated, but again, it is a good verb to know.
So let's check out the dialogue.
What are you guys laughing about?
Nothing.
Just guy talk.
No, tell me.
We were just riffing.
It was nothing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We were just joking around.
So who knows what they were talking about?
Maybe they were talking about the woman and they were making jokes about her.
That's not very nice, but I have no idea what they're talking about.
And usually that's the case because sometimes when we make jokes about somebody or something,
you and I might think it's funny, but somebody else might not think it's funny.
So when you riff, you have to be careful.
Do you guys know the Joe Rogan podcast?
It's a very popular podcast.
It's an interview and in that podcast, those guys, Joe Rogan and the people that he interviews,
they riff all the time.
Sometimes they talk about serious subjects, history or politics or COVID-19.
They'll talk about really serious stuff.
But then suddenly they start making some jokes, something that nobody was really expecting.
And that is an example of riffing, riffing.
Okay.
So I hope that makes some sense.
Again, check out the Joe Rogan podcast, check out other podcasts, check out talk shows.
In America, we have a lot of late night talk shows, which are generally funny.
And in those shows, they riff a lot.
Okay.
And riffing is funny, usually for most people.
So that's today's dialogue.
That's today's expression.
We're going to listen to it two more times.
