Can you believe it?

Today's expression is a good one.
It's a good word. It's not really an expression, but it's a good word. Perplexed.
Perplexed. And we usually say, I'm perplexed, or this is perplexing, or I was so perplexed.
It's a great word, P -E -R -P -L -E -X -E -D, perplexed.
Perplexed, keep the E -D, so when you are perplexed, when something is perplexing, it's very difficult to understand, it's very confusing.
So for example, as an American growing up in the country, What do we eat?
What do country people in America eat?
We eat meat and potatoes and vegetables every day.
Sandwiches for lunch, cereal, maybe pancakes for breakfast. But every day it's meat and potatoes, meat and potatoes, meat and potatoes.
So we need a fork and a knife and sometimes a spoon.
One day I went to this city.
And my friend took me to a Chinese restaurant, and they gave me chopsticks.
I had no idea how to use these chopsticks.
It was very perplexing.
And even the food on the menu, I had no idea what these things meant.
Those words. It was so perplexing.
this soup here, and this dumpling thing there, and these chopsticks, and this tea, and the red tablecloth, and the dragons everywhere.
It was very interesting, but very perplexing.
I didn't understand the menu.
I didn't know how to use the chopsticks.
That's a perfect example.
Now, we can use this for language situations, when we go to another country and the culture is just so different, we don't know what to do.
We can say it's perplexing.
A perplexing problem would be a problem that is just very confusing.
You don't know how to solve it.
Let's check out a dialogue.
You look perplexed.
Yeah. Was that a man or a woman?
Oh. You mean Pat? yeah, I'm not sure either actually.
Yeah, yeah, there are those people who, children, children all look like boys and girls.
They all look the same, but I mean an adult.
An adult, you know, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s.
Sometimes it's really difficult to know if the person is a male or a female it's very perplexing am I talking with a man or am I talking with a woman is that a man or is that a woman it's perplexing it doesn't matter but still it's perplexing hmm we'll have to watch that person when they go to the bathroom which bathroom do they go to I I always go to my bathroom at home hmm yeah and the name Pat everybody Pat can be a guy's name and it can be a woman's name it comes from Patrick which was which is a guy's name or Patricia which is a woman's name.
Okay. Yeah perplexing perplexed.
When was the last time you were perplexed?
Leave me a message, let's check that dialogue out two more times, and then in celebration of our 100th podcast, I'm gonna read off all the great people who have left comments and ratings on iTunes and on the Google App Store.
You look perplexed.
Yeah. Was that a man or a woman, oh you mean Pat yeah I'm not sure either actually you look perplexed yeah was that a man or a woman oh you mean Pat yeah I'm not sure either actually okay it is our 100th episode and you know I'm looking at the comments on iTunes right now and it just makes me really happy.
I want to thank everybody who left a comment in the past. Thank you so much. We've got a couple more new ones and the first one, Kitson Bird from Thailand.
Thank you very much for your work and effort.
I like listening to your podcast, Coach Shane.
You have been doing such a good job.
I'm trying to master my English, not just get the hang of it, I hope.
I love that, that's right.
So you can get the hang of a language, and you can have a simple conversation, where's the bathroom, where are you from, what do you do?
But to master English is to have a feel for the language, to really be able to talk with foreigners, to talk about your country and your cultures, and to ask questions, and also to understand the movies and the TV shows, and that requires mastery.
And now I'm gonna move to the Google App Store, play .google .com.
And we have a ton of fantastic user reviews.
