Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English!
Hello everybody, welcome back to daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
This is number 962.
The expression is very good.
I wish I suffered from this problem.
Today's expression is, the Midas touch.
You have the Midas touch.
I wish I had the Midas touch.
The Midas touch. Three words first, the T -H -E Midas, M -I -D -A -S.
But, it's a proper noun so the M is capitalized.
It's a big M. M -I -D -A -S Midas with kind of an S pronunciation at the end.
And finally touch, T -O -U -C -H, the Midas touch.
So what does this expression mean?
Some of you probably already know.
Check out the dialogue and then I will explain.
Where should I put my money?
Talk to Darren. He's got the Midas touch.
Really? He knows about investing?
Are you kidding? He's 34 and retired.
He just bought a Lambo.
Oh good, good conversation there.
Where should I put my money?
In this case put, P -U -T actually means invest.
Okay, so do you have extra money?
You're lucky if you do.
So do you like, I don't know, buy stocks?
Do you buy real estate?
Do you buy gold and silver?
If you have extra money, what do you do with it?
Me? I don't have any extra money.
Any money I get is paying for bills, that's for sure.
But anyway, this is a good problem to have.
Where should I put my money?
Where should I invest my money?
And the guy says talk to Darren.
Darren is a guy. He's got, Darren has, Darren has got the Midas touch.
Mm -hmm. So this is our idiom here.
The Midas touch refers to Greek mythology.
There was a king, his name was King Midas.
And he did a favor and a god said, oh, you're a good king, I will grant you one wish, whatever you want, I will give you that ability.
And the king said, oh really, please, let me have the ability to make anything into gold if I touch it.
And the god said, okay, there you go.
And sure enough, King Midas had this magical touch.
If he touched a cup, it would turn to gold.
If he touched an apple, it would turn to gold.
If he shook your hand, you would turn to gold.
Aha, so the message is, you know, doing good things is lovely, but don't get too greedy.
But anyway, the idiom means to have the Midas touch means to have that magical ability to make gold, to make money.
Some people really seem gifted at finding out how to make money, at buying stocks or buying real estate or buying gold and silver or Bitcoin, whatever it is, right?
Or starting businesses that make lots of money.
Yeah, that's the idea, to have the Midas touch.
So when it comes to investing money, talk to Darren, he's got the Midas touch.
Really? He knows about investing?
Are you kidding? Yes, yes he does.
He's 34, he's 34 years old and retired.
Oh my god, I'm 52 and still working hard.
This guy's 34 years old and retired.
My god, he does have the Midas touch.
He just bought a Lambo, Lambo, L -A -M -B -O, Lambo.
It's actually short for Lamborghini, which is an Italian sports car, very expensive.
Wow, Darren is 34, rich.
He's got the Midas touch.
So if you want to learn about investing, talk to Darren.
He's got the Midas touch, okay?
It's a really, really good expression to have the Midas touch.
