Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
The podcast. Yeah, we got a great expression today.
Ivy League. Hmm. Ivy League.
Ivy League? Ivy League.
Have you heard of the Ivy League?
Let me spell it. I V Y.
And that's a big guy, not a little I a capital I.
I V Y. Ivy League. Again, that's a capital L or a big L.
L E A G U E. Spelling is kind of messy, right?
I'll spell it one more time.
I V I V Y. League. L E A G U E.
Pronunciation. Ivy League.
It is a proper noun.
It's a name. So we need a big I and a big L.
The Ivy League refers to eight American universities, all of them in the northeast.
And all of them are very famous schools.
And the schools are Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College.
Yeah, Dartmouth College.
It's still a university, but they say college.
Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale.
Yeah. So have you been to one of these schools?
Have you been a student at one of these schools?
Me? No, no. Dartmouth University is actually, I've been there, Dartmouth University.
Jimmy, when he was born, he was transferred to the Dartmouth University Hospital.
So he spent several months at Dartmouth University.
It is a very nice campus, but Ivy League.
Ivy League. Why do we say Ivy?
So this goes back to the tradition that universities are old buildings with lots and lots of knowledge.
And back in the UK, Oxford University, Cambridge University, these were very old schools.
And outside the buildings on the walls grew a plant called Ivy, I -V -Y.
And these universities, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, U Penn, Princeton, and Yale, they also, especially Princeton, Yale, and Harvard, they also have a special day every year where they plant ivy to grow on the walls of the beautiful big buildings.
So in America, when we say Ivy League, we don't necessarily think about the actual plant, but we do think about these elite schools, these excellent schools, have a reputation for very good education, and also League, L -E -A -G -U -E.
When we hear the word League, we think sports.
And the Ivy League is a sports league.
It is the league of the elite schools.
So what do you think?
Do you think these schools have good, powerful football teams and basketball teams, or so so?
Yeah, usually they're, they're good, but they're not the best.
People who go to Ivy League schools, generally don't go in order to play basketball.
They go in order to study.
Oh, and by the way, as you can guess, Ivy League schools, oh my god, they're super expensive.
Check out the dialogue.
Brian went to Brown?
Yeah, an Ivy League school?
How? He's dumb. Brian's daddy is loaded.
It's true, yeah, you don't need, obviously most of the students that go to Ivy League schools are really, really, really, really smart.
But not all of them.
They're not idiots, but they don't, they aren't necessarily geniuses either.
Especially if your dad, or mom, but generally your dad, if he's really, really rich, you can go.
It's true. Well, look at George Bush.
George Bush, George W.
Bush. He went to Yale University.
He was a fool. People used to talk about how dumb he was.
Now, actually he's not dumb.
He was just a drinker, a party guy.
He didn't study. But, you know, do you think his high school grades and his SAT score were, were that good?
No, of course not. But his family has a tradition of going to Yale.
So he did too. He went to Yale.
Family tradition, family money.
Those are two easy ways to join an Ivy League school.
Otherwise, you need to be really, really, really smart.
Or maybe you need to know somebody very, very, very powerful.
That's the way to get into an Ivy League school.
And hey, if you want to get into my school, let's master English, it's really easy.
