Hello, everybody. My name is Coach Shane, and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on. Let's master English.
Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions, the podcast.
All right, everybody.
We are getting so close to one of the most important days of the year, December 22nd.
That's my birthday.
Thank you. Thank you.
How old will I be? Never mind.
Okay, today's expression.
Now, not only is my birthday coming up, but Christmas is coming up.
And if you live in America, probably in the UK, maybe in any English -speaking country, especially around this time of year, you might hear this word.
He is a scrooge. Don't be a scrooge.
Coach Shane is a scrooge.
I don't think that's true.
I don't think I am a scrooge.
Another word for a scrooge would be a tightwad.
So let me spell him.
Scrooge S -C -R -O -O -G -E, but it's a big S because it's a name.
Scrooge. Mr. Scrooge.
I'll talk about Mr.
Scrooge in a second.
The second word, a tightwad, it's one word T -I -G -H -T -W -A -D.
And these are the same things.
A Scrooge, a tightwad.
It's somebody who does not want to spend any of their money.
They might be really rich.
They might have tons of money in their pocket, but they do not want to spend any money.
That person is a Scrooge or a tightwad.
Again, I'll explain Scrooge in a second.
But first, check out the dialogue.
Miller Highlife? He's a tightwad.
He'll never change.
That's like 50 cents a can.
Coach Shane should live it up.
Just like his dad, a mean old Scrooge.
Yeah, that's kind of true.
When I lived in Chicago, the cheapest beer was Miller.
And it was really, really cheap.
Maybe because we lived near the Miller beer factory.
Right now, where I live, the cheapest beer is Coors Light.
And that's what I buy.
I buy the cheap beer.
The cheapest beer. So it's funny, when somebody comes to my house, like one of my neighbors comes to my house, and I offer them would you like a beer and they see that I have Miller or Coors Light, they all say no.
Oh, no, no, thank you.
That's all right. No, thank you.
So it's perfect. So I'm saving money, because you know, it's inexpensive.
And also nobody else wants to drink my beer.
So I get more beer for me.
And I get I offer people beer.
So I'm a good guy, right?
Yeah. But once again, the reason they don't want my beer is because it's cheap.
It's cheap beer. That's true.
Maybe I should live it up.
Maybe I should buy some more expensive beers, some of that tasty, nice European beer, maybe a good German beer.
Do you have a beer that you can recommend to me?
Yeah, let me know. Maybe my birthday's coming up.
All right. So maybe on my birthday, I won't be a Scrooge.
I won't be a tightwad.
And I will buy a nice beer.
So what is this Scrooge?
So in America, at Christmas time, we have a movie called A Christmas Carol.
And my favorite version of that movie stars the actor Albert Finney as the Scrooge as Mr.
Mr. Scrooge. And he's the main character in the movie.
And the movie is about Christmas time.
And it's about giving and sharing and being nice.
But the Scrooge Mr.
Scrooge is not nice.
He's very mean. He's very nasty.
So in the movie, at night, Christmas Eve, three different, very scary, well, one of them is really scary, ghosts visits him, the ghost of the past, the ghost of the Scrooge.
And thanks to these ghosts, the Scrooge, who was a very mean, tightwad, very stingy man, never wanted to spend his money, was just a horrible, mean old man, becomes a nice guy.
It's a great movie.
A Christmas Carol once again is the name of the movie.
And my recommendation is the Albert Finney version.
It's a beautiful classic movie.
Enjoy it. All right, guys, that is it for today.
Thank you so much for listening to the podcast, a Scrooge, a tightwad, somebody who does not want to spend their money.
Nobody likes a Scrooge.
Is that true, especially at Christmas time?
