In this chapter of The West, the narrative centers on Wukong’s desperate attempt to rescue his companions from the clutches of Yellow Brows. Having been previously thwarted by the demon’s "magic cloth" and "symbols," Wukong seeks the counsel of the Buddha Maitreya. Maitreya reveals that Yellow Brows was formerly his student and that the formidable weapons used against Wukong were actually "precious Buddhist treasures" stolen from him. Despite Wukong’s admission that he "destroyed the symbols," Maitreya remains unfazed, setting the stage for a calculated counter-attack.
Returning to the monastery, Wukong employs psychological warfare to neutralize the demon's reliance on his artifacts. By taunting Yellow Brows—challenging him to fight without the "magic cloth" and dismissing his power as merely a byproduct of stolen items—Wukong successfully goads the demon into a physical confrontation. The strategy involves a tactical retreat; Wukong engages the demon in combat but uses "small steps backward" to draw the fight away from the monastery and into the valley. By "pretending to be scared" and crying out that the demon is "too powerful," Wukong lures the arrogant Yellow Brows into a vulnerable position within a nearby melon field, far from his base of power.
Once in the melon field, the narrative shifts into a clever display of transformation. The farmer, who is actually Maitreya in disguise, offers the demon a melon. The interaction highlights the demon's gluttony and lack of vigilance. Upon attempting to eat, the fruit "shrank to the size of a berry" and was swallowed by the demon, revealing that Wukong had been hiding inside. Inside the demon's body, Wukong unleashes a flurry of attacks, described as "Bumph!" and "Pow!," effectively incapacitating the monster from within.
As the demon collapses, Maitreya reveals his true form and demands the return of his "magic cloth." The demon, defeated and humbled, surrenders the artifact. Wukong leaps from the demon's nose, returning to his "normal size," and the magic cloth is used to bind the demon once and for all.
The aftermath sees the restoration of order: Maitreya uses a "spell" to repair the damaged symbols, the captives are freed, and the companions—including the dragon, turtle, and serpent—depart. The chapter concludes on a poignant note regarding the dynamic between the Tang monk and his disciple. The monk expresses regret for "not believing" Wukong’s warnings, to which the monkey replies with a laugh, suggesting a growing mutual respect as they continue their journey west. This episode serves as a testament to Wukong’s tactical brilliance, proving that wit and cooperation with divine powers can overcome even the most formidable magical threats.
