Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
Come on, let's master English.
Hello everybody, welcome back to daily easy English expression...
the podcast 641 a .m.
October 19th, 2017, current temperature is 31 degrees Fahrenheit zero degrees Celsius.
NASA and COAD out there this morning!
How are you? Where are you?
Would you like the weather in your country?
Let me know, I'll be happy to give your forecast because I'm the weatherman.
Now I'm just an English coach.
Today we're to study a phrasal verb.
Like I said yesterday in our LME Live class, if you want to master daily English, there are three things you need to absolutely understand.
Number one, pronouns.
You might think you understand pronouns.
Trust me, in daily English you probably don't.
Number two, phrasal verbs, yep that's what we're gonna focus on today a phrasal verb.
And number three, get got.
How Americans use get and got, of course there are other things to master too but those three are really important areas.
So today a phrasal verb now the phrasal verb is to make up MAKE UP the phrasal verb to make up has at least four common definitions one of the common definitions is create create I need to make up a poem I need to make up song, I need to make up a reason, I need to create or invent.
Another definition for make -up to make -up would be reconcile, reconcile, r -e -c -o -n -c -i -l -e to reconcile, to make up and that means husband and a wife have a good relationship, they have a really big fight, they hate each other and then they make up they become close again another definition and once again this is like create to compose or to form okay but not necessarily something I'll show you in in the dialogue compose specifically compose or even form F -O -R -M as a verb And the other one that I wanna talk about today, to make up, is to compensate.
To compensate. C -O -M -P -E -N -S -A -T -E.
To compensate. And I'm gonna give you the examples, three examples, in today's dialogue.
So listen carefully, okay guys?
Alright, thanks John.
I'll make up for missing work on Friday.
Call you tomorrow! Did you and Jon make up?
Yeah. We met and had a beer last night.
Good. You guys make up half our team.
We need you two to be friends.
Did you hear? 3 times.
I used make up 3 times.
I'll make up for missing work on Friday.
So I'll make up for missing work on Friday.
so this guy is not going to the office on Friday he is indebted you know he should be working on Friday but he's not going to work on Friday so he says I'll make up for missing work on Friday so I guess maybe he'll come to work on Saturday or maybe he will work late on Wednesday and Thursday this is the idea He's going to compensate for the deficit or the loss.
He's going to make up for the missing work.
Did you and John make up?
So evidently, the guy and John had an argument, but now they're friends again.
They made up. They made up.
And the final one, you guys make up half our team.
okay so you guys John and you make up half our team so our team must have four people me some other person John and the guy on the phone so four people and John and the other guy make up half the team they are half the team they consist they form they compose half the team.
Okay yeah it's tough stuff.
I know it's confusing probably you're listening to this and you kind of understand but you're not really sure right?
Yeah don't worry that's what happens.
That's why having an English coach, an English teacher is really important.
And then, you need somebody, a teacher like myself or like our other coaches, to help you see these phrasal verbs so that the more you see them, the more comfortable you are with them and then you can start using them.
You know, you can look at a dictionary and memorize all day long but if you don't know how to use them properly it's gonna last forever that pain that embarrassment is going to last forever so I just gave you in a podcast actually four definitions for the phrasal verb to make up do I expect you to memorize them and use them?
Nope. However, perhaps the next time you see or hear make up you'll think again, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
What exactly does he mean by make up?
And maybe you'll start catching it.
Maybe you'll start hearing it more and more.
Again in DDM, especially DDM, perf too, but especially DDM, we really study a lot of phrasal verbs every day, every week.
