Hello everybody, welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
The Podcast. My name is Coach Shane.
Thank you very much for listening to the Podcast.
It's 7 47 a .m. July 6th 72 degrees Fahrenheit outside.
It's already warm. Yeah summer is here for the next few weeks.
I Like the cold weather Okay, today's expression.
Oh, it's very good two words That are confusing But most Americans use them the same way, but actually they're different the two words are jealousy and envy jealousy j -e -a -l -o -u -s -y jealousy envy E -N -V -Y mm -hmm envy and jealousy so many times Americans are gonna use these two words the same way you have a new car I'm so jealous oh I'm envious we use it the same way I'm jealous of your new car I'm envious of your new car um and that's fine and envy is the perfect word in this case if you see something that somebody else has and you wish you had it?
Envy. Envious would be the perfect word to use, to covet something, C -O -V -E -T.
And jealousy can be used in similar situations, the same situations.
However, jealousy also has that angry feel to it.
So, for example, the jealous husband, okay?
His wife is talking to another man and he gets angry.
He gets jealous. So jealousy can include envy, but it can also include anger, or resent.
Do you understand? So, probably for most of us, the better word to use is envy, but in my opinion after living in America of my life, I would say jealous or jealousy is much more commonly used.
Americans don't really care.
If you have a new car, I'm jealous.
If you're talking to my wife, I'm jealous.
you can say the same word in both situations but there is a difference check out the dialogue oh i'm jealous of you what why you're so smart i'm jealous you mean you're envious what yeah typical american is jealous jealous you have something I wish I had it I'm jealous again actually envious would be the better word but in daily English it's the same thing we don't care now once again a jealous husband like I said that has that kind of feeling of maybe anger gets angry if somebody is talking to his wife we wouldn't say envious Envious husband.
An envious husband actually wants the other husband's wife, so that's different.
So we can use jealous in both situations, but we can't use envy, envious in both situations.
Once again, envy is when you wish you had something that somebody else has.
and jealous, we can use that in that situation.
Jealous can also include those angry feelings.
I hope that makes sense.
Americans get confused.
Generally, if you ask an American on the street, what's the difference?
They'll need a couple of minutes to think about the answer.
Yeah, it's confusing, it's confusing.
I hope that I have helped you understand though.
That's it everybody, that is today's expression.
