Celebrating America’s 250th: Insights from the America’s Field Trip Contest Winners

As the United States approaches its 250th birthday—a milestone referred to as the "semi-quincentennial"—the "America 250" commission has launched initiatives to engage the next generation. Central to this effort is the "America's Field Trip" contest, a national competition that invited students in grades three through 12 to reflect on their national identity by answering the prompt: "What does America mean to you?"

The Mission of America’s Field Trip

Former U.S. Treasurer and head of the program, Rosie Rios, explains that the contest serves as a platform to "educate, engage, and unite" students. With thousands of participants from all 56 parts of the country, the competition aimed to foster a deeper connection to national identity. The program awarded 75 first-place winners with unique, "backstage experiences" at major federal agencies and historic sites, ranging from the crown of the Statue of Liberty to the vault at the New York Federal Reserve. According to Rios, these experiences are designed to inspire leadership and help students "visualize their future," often providing them with their first opportunities to travel or explore potential career paths in fields like cybersecurity or monetary policy.

Voices of the Next Generation

The contest succeeded in highlighting diverse perspectives, as evidenced by two first-place winners: Julianne, a 16-year-old from West Virginia, and Abby, a 9-year-old from Florida.

Challenging Appalachian Stereotypes

Julianne, who used voice-to-text to craft a powerful essay, addressed the negative portrayals of her home state. She noted that she had been told her entire life to leave Appalachia to "go somewhere with your life," such as New York or California. Her winning entry challenged these "exaggerated distortions," arguing that the people of Appalachia are "resourceful and hardworking." For Julianne, the true American dream is recognizing that places often viewed as "underprivileged" actually possess significant "room for growth." She will be traveling to San Antonio to tour the Alamo.

History Through the Lens of Heroes

Nine-year-old Abby took a more poetic approach, writing about historical figures who shaped her understanding of the nation. By reading biographies—a habit she started in the first grade—she learned lessons from icons like Rosa Parks, whose "small simple acts" made a "big mark," and Teddy Roosevelt, who instilled in her a sense of "duty of preserving our nation's parks." Abby’s reflection highlights how individual stories contribute to the broader American spirit. She is set to visit Yellowstone, where she hopes to see the nature and moose that embody the beauty she wrote about.

Looking Toward 2026

The America 250 project is a multi-year journey leading up to July 4, 2026. By focusing on nonpartisan engagement, the commission hopes to inspire youth to take pride in their country’s history. As Rosie Rios noted, the program is about more than just a trip; it is about providing a "golden ticket" experience that empowers young people to realize their potential and understand the complex, inspiring narrative of the United States.
