Good morning and welcome to KidNews.
I'm Kim. Today is Monday, June 2nd, 2025.
And we begin with residents along the Gulf and East coasts of the United States about to spend a whole lot more time checking the weather.
Why? Because the Atlantic hurricane season is officially here!
It began yesterday with NOAA forecasters predicting an above -average number of storms over the next six months.
The good news? Sea temps aren't quite as warm as they were this time last year.
Still, 13 to 19 big enough to get a name, weather systems are expected, with 3 to 5 turning into major events.
This year's alphabetical list, as set by the World Meteorological Organization, begins with Andrea, Barry, Chantal and Dexter.
Storm names repeat every six years unless they are associated with a particularly devastating hurricane.
Those get retired, like Barrel, Helene, and Milton did last year.
In all, 99 names have been removed from use since 1954.
Ever wonder where your bags go when you check them at the airport?
One youngster found out the hard way.
While his mother was talking to a ticketing agent at Newark Airport in New Jersey last week, the unidentified boy climbed onto a conveyor belt, which pulled him behind a wall and into a maze of other conveyor belts.
It only took moments for the mom to realize he was gone and for Port Authority police to jump into action.
According to the Daily News, they caught up with him just before he reached the x -ray machine and took a possible plunge with the rest of the bags.
Aside from panic for all involved, no one was injured.
From 2024 runner up to 2025 champion and all 13 year old Texas teen Faison Zaki had to do was overcome a late round flub and cap off two days of intense Scripps National Bee competition by correctly spelling the word aeclairsiisma, which means an enlightening explanation of something that was previously inexplicable.
For those giving it a try, it's E -C -L -A -I -R -C -I -S -S -E -M -E -N -T.
Faizan became just the fifth runner -up in a century to come back and win and the first since 2001.
With the victory, Faizan takes home $52 ,500, a large portion of which he says is going to charity.
Starting tonight, there will be a new face greeting viewers of NBC's Nightly News.
45 -year -old Tom Lomus is his name, and he's got big shoes to fill.
First and foremost, those of longtime anchor Lester Holt, who signed off with his trademarked line, Take care of yourself and each other for the final time Friday night.
Before Mr. Holt, the legendary Anchor Desk was occupied by Brian Williams, Tom Brokaw, John Chancellor, and David Brinkley.
Mr. Holt calls his 15 years delivering the news the honor of a lifetime, and while he'll no longer be a daily fixture on the network, he still plans to report for the weekly magazine dateline.
Taylor Swift is back in control.
After years of battling record labels, she told fans in a handwritten note posted online Friday that, "...all of the music I've ever made now belongs to me." Her high -profile fight began back in 2019 and prompted her to re -record four of her first six albums, tagging each title with Taylor's version.
All went on top of the Billboard charts and shattered streaming records.
There's no word how much Taylor had to pay to reclaim her own sweat and tears, but she did credit record label Shamrock for helping make it possible, and she ended her note to fans with obvious satisfaction.
The best things that have ever been mine finally actually are.
It's a great time to be a sports fan.
The NBA Finals are set.
It'll be the Indiana Pacers versus the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Game one is Thursday.
To hockey, for the second year in a row, the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers will battle it out for Lord Stanley's cup.
Florida took the title last year.
A Canadian team hasn't won since 1993.
And history was made at the ballparks Friday night, when the Yankees' Aaron Judge faced off against the Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani.
And both reigning MVPs smashed homeruns in the first inning of the same game.
Aaron was first and joked that Shohei was copying him.
The Dodgers came out on top of that game and the next with an 18 to 2 route on Saturday.
Still to come. Working the drive through pays off big time for one contagiously happy high school graduate.
But first, the Gustafsons of Kalispell, Montana want to give a birthday shout out to Jacob, who just turned 11, and James, who's about to be 9.
Boys, your mom, dad, and big sister love watching you both dominate the soccer field, wish you the biggest and happiest birthday celebrations, and can't wait to make more epic memories this summer.
Happy days Jacob and James.
Now, today's kid news quiz.

Ninety -Nine. What was the winning word in this year's spelling bee?
A clarysema. Police saved a youngster who climbed aboard what at Newark Airport?

Michael Baker didn't think much of it, but customer Maria Mendoza sure did.
Impressed by his work ethic, she posted a video showing the hard -working young man radiating joy as he worked the drive -through.
Financially, college wasn't in the cards for Mykayle, but Maria turned her TikTok into a GoFundMe, which in 10 days obliterated its original goal and now stands at more than $171 ,000.
Maria hopes his story encourages others to notice the good in to young people, reward hard work, and lead with kindness.
And Mike Hale? He's blown away.
He told TV station WKRC, I always watched people on YouTube receive cool surprises, but I never thought it would happen to me.
Thanks again to the Gustafson's of Kalispell, Montana for sponsoring today's quiz.
