Hello, everybody. Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expressions.
Today's expression is, well, you need to listen carefully, ok.
It's two expressions, two words, two phrases.
The first one drop off and the second one drop off one more time drop off and drop off now if you listen carefully there is a difference slight difference in intonation drop off a phrasal verb DROP OFF two words and drop off drop drop off That's a noun and some people write it as one word dr. Op off But most people I think write it as hyphenated dr. Op dash off So two words is a verb.
It's a phrasal verb one word It's a noun it could be an adjective, too so to drop off means to to put something someplace.
Especially when you're driving to take someone someplace and let them out of the car.
So every day the mailman drops off my mail in the mailbox.
And every day school buses drop off children at schools.
Okay, this is the idea to drop off you take something somewhere and then put it there or Someone you take someone somewhere and let them out of the car or truck or bus or whatever Okay, so this is the idea to drop off.
It's a very common very useful phrasal verb So what about the noun drop off?
Okay, so we use it like this right there Where do you see that place that building that's my drop -off that is my drop -off that is the place where I want to be dropped off that is my drop -off place so we can use it as a noun that is my drop -off we can use it as an adjective that is my drop -off place That is the place where I want me or my package or my mail to be dropped off Does this make sense?
So they're very similar The meaning is basically the same but once again one is a verb and the other is a noun or an Adjective and again, these are actually really common in daily English Especially in a taxi or maybe even in a bus or if your friend gives you a ride.
Check out the dialogue.
Ah, drop me off over here.
Oh, I dropped off Lucas here too.
Huh. It's the best drop -off point for subway and bus users.
Oh, I see. Watch your step as you get out.
There's quite a drop off.
Oh, what a great dialogue.
And I used a third definition.
Let's start from the beginning drop me off over here.
That's a verb drop me off Over here.
Okay, so the guy's in a car and he says let me out of the car over here And he must be pointing to someplace close by and the other guy says, oh I dropped off Lucas here to Lucas another guy.
Oh you're getting off at the same place where Lucas did.
Okay Okay, next sentence, it's the best drop off point or subway and bus users, Aha.
So right now we're in a car.
But for people who like to use the subway or a bus, this is a perfect place to be dropped off.
I guess on the right side the subways there on the left side the bus is there.
So it's very convenient.
Okay, and the next one, I see, watch your step.
Oh, we studied watch your step be careful of where you go yesterday or the day before watch your step as you get out There's quite a drop -off.
Okay now we know this is either a bus or a truck and I'll tell you I have a friend who has a truck and when you get out of the truck You like have to jump There's a huge drop off and that's the third definition definition of a Drop off a drop off when the level Suddenly shoot goes down okay So when the level it's you know You can think about a lake or the ocean if you've ever been in a lake or the ocean you start at the beach And then it goes that a slowly slowly slowly the water gets deeper deeper deeper And then suddenly shoot the water just it just gets really really really really deep That's
a drop off. That is a drop off, okay?
It's a great expression.
That's the definition number three.
And once again, a drop off as in a sudden decrease in height.
Like in the ocean shoonk!
That's one word and we can use it as DROPOFF or with a hyphen DROP -OFF, okay?
So I hope it wasn't confusing.
You're gonna listen to the dialogue Two more times and I'm sure if you think about the imagery you will understand I hope you do.
So I want you to listen again two more times and don't forget together.
