Hello everybody. My name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions.
You and me every day.
Come on! Let's master English.
Hello everybody! Welcome back to Daily Easy English Expression.
Today's podcast is brought to you by Amazon and their audiobooks.
You can get one for free.
I'll tell you how after we listen to today's expression.
So yesterday we studied...
Knock yourself out.
Knock yourself out.
KNOCK. Knock. Yourself.
Out. And what did it mean?
It meant... Go ahead!
Help yourself! Oooooh.
Cookies! Knock yourself out.
Really? Yeah, I've got more in the oven.
Ah boy. Sounds delicious.
which is, actually today I went to my mom's house.
When I walked in the house she was making meatloaf.
So I said, ooh, meatloaf, and my mom said, knock yourself out.
So I had four pieces of meatloaf and my dad got angry.
Now, another definition.
Today we've got, knock yourself out part two.
And we always, almost always say it like this, don't knock yourself out, don't knock yourself out.
What does that mean, don't help yourself, don't eat the cookies, don't eat the meatloaf?
No, no, no, don't knock yourself out means don't work too hard, don't, for example, let's say you want to go on a trip and you are driving, Well, if you drove all day, it would take you about 10 hours to get to your destination.
So you could do it in one day or you could do it in 2 days, 5 hours each day.
Which one is better?
When you're young, you like to do it in one day.
But when you get old, like my age, oh man I don't like to knock myself out.
I don't want to be too tired.
I want to take my time Yeah, I'll spend the money to stay at a motel.
I'm not gonna knock myself out I'm not gonna make myself too tired and this expression makes sense right to knock out once again I talked about this yesterday, but in boxing if a boxer punches you So hard you boom.
You fall down and boo, you it's like you're knocked out, we call it a KO.
And it's not because you're tired, it's because the guy hit you.
But if you work too hard you can also knock yourself out, if you exercise too hard, if you do something too hard you can knock yourself out, including studying English.
Let's listen to the dialogue.
I'll give you a ride to the airport tomorrow.
Oh no, don't knock yourself out.
It's no problem. I'm going near there anyway.
Oh, wonderful then.
Well, that's very nice to give somebody a ride to the airport.
Yeah. If you ever go anywhere, if you ever fly anywhere, you can park your car at the airport but it's more convenient to have your friend or family member take you there but then they need to pick you up at the airport.
In America, it's a joke.
We're friends but never ask me to take you to the airport.
Seriously, Americans hate going to the airport because usually it's far away and it's very complicated.
It's very confusing.
Parking can be expensive for day parking, yeah.
Anyway, that's the idea, don't knock yourself out.
So, like I said yesterday, if you get my tweet or on Facebook or on LinkedIn, I think it was LinkedIn and on Facebook, I said if you want to watch all my videos on YouTube, knock yourself out, go ahead.
However, I have over 1000 videos on YouTube, So, if you try to watch them in one day, you're going to knock yourself out, you're going to make yourself too tired.
So, go ahead. Feel free.
Help yourself. Watch my videos.
They're all free. However, I recommend taking your time.
Knock yourself out, but don't knock yourself out.
Do you understand? Let's check out that dialogue two more times and then I'll tell you how you can get a free audiobook.
I'll give you a ride to the airport tomorrow.
No don't knock yourself out.
It's no problem. I'm going near there anyway.
Wonderful then. I'll give you a ride to the airport tomorrow.
No don't knock yourself out.
It's no problem. I'm going near there anyway.
Oh, wonderful then.
So, how is your English?
Do you have any English books, books written all in English?
Maybe some of you might have Harry Potter, right?
Maybe a famous business book, or maybe a history book.
Do you have a favorite book that you have, an actual book?
If you do, I'm curious.
Let me know what your favorite book is.
Well, did you ever listen to an audiobook?
We have a book club and we have an audiobook club.
I'll tell you about that in a minute, but if you're really into improving your English, I highly recommend you start listening to audiobooks.
And if you're a beginner, the easy way to do it is look at your books.
What books do you have?
It could be in English or maybe in your language.
For example, what's a book that we did recently?
There's a Brazilian author.
His name is Paulo Cuero, and he wrote a book called The Alchemist. Great book, very nice book.
Do you have that in your language?
It's a very popular book all around the world.
Another book that we studied, ah, Tuesdays with Mory.
Oh, fantastic, really really nice book.
These are books that we've studied in our book club.
Well, there's a good chance, these books are international bestsellers.
You might have one of those books at home.
Well, if you do, why don't you try listening to it because you can get those books.
You can get one of those books for free right now.
Now, go here www .audibletrial .com slash LME.
One more time www .audibletrial .com slash LME, LME means let's master English and you add that ad LME that way Amazon knows it's me and and then they say thank you Shane and they give me a couple of dollars.
Yeah they do one just one time but that's it's a sponsor it's a sponsor for our show Amazon is sponsoring this is that cool?
So anyway you sign up and you can choose any book any audio book you want that's pretty cool.
So if you have a book at home Harry Potter maybe it's a Harry Potter book or or any book Maybe it's an old classic or maybe it's a history book, things my teacher didn't teach me or tell me.
Get that audio book and start listening to it.
Test yourself. No it's not easy.
Of course it's not easy, but it's really excellent.
It's an excellent way to improve your listening.
Now in our book club, so far one of the most popular books was a book called Wonder by RJ Palacio, I think that was her name.
Anyway, now that was actually a children's book, but it's a great book for adults too.
That was an excellent book so if you don't have any books at home but you still want to try an audio book, well they have a huge children's selection.
And I know, oh but I'm, you know, look at me, I'm 47 years old.
hey relax sometimes kids books are pretty cool did you ever see a Pixar movie or a Disney movie some of those movies are pretty good even though the target is kids yeah you can listen to one of those books so if you sign up once again you get one audiobook for free this month in our book club I'll tell you what we got hold on a second because I have to go check Amazon book Club Oh No Did I File It Just A Second Here We Go A Secret Gift How an Act of Kindness Revealed Hidden Lives of the Great Depression It's a Long Title It's Written by Ted Gupp This is the Book That We're Studying Now This Book
Is A Little Bit Difficult So I Recommended So, if you want to join the Book Club more than happy to do that just send me an email.
My email is dailydictationmembers .com.
but you got to get the audiobook and I recommend getting the Kindle or the Text version too.
It's a great book. It's a window into America Back in the 1930s.
Actually, it's great book.
Very it's a great wonderful book.
Now. This book is actually I think it was $27 but You can get it for free if you sign up now now if you're already a member However, what they do is every month they charge you $14 .95.
That's the monthly membership fee.
However, if you pay that, you can get any audiobook you want.
So if the audiobook is $4, well you can get that for $14.
But if the audiobook is you know $27, you can still get that and not pay anything extra.
And so far, I think I've been a member of audible for over a year actually.
Actually, I get two books a month and only two of my books have been cheaper than $14 .95.
Every one of my books has been more expensive.
So, I'm saving money.
I'm saving lots of money.
I really love books.
To be honest, I like reading books on paper but audiobooks are so cool because I do a lot of hiking and I do a lot of fishing, so when I'm outside, even when I'm washing dishes, I listen to audiobooks.
At home, I don't have a TV so this is my entertainment.
Reading books and listening to books and it's a great way.
So once again, listening to English books, yeah that can be pretty tough.
So, I gave you a couple of ideas on how you can do it.
Number one, get an audio book of something that you already have at home.
Number two, get a children's book, something that looks interesting to you.
Number three, follow us in the book club.
You can discuss the book as you listen to it and it will...it's a lot of fun.
Come on. Books are great, if you're not reading books, you know you're wrong and I understand.
Now actually I do know they have some books, not like in English but they do have books probably in your language too.
You'll have to do some searches, I'm not too sure.
But anyway, once again, you can sign up get a book for free www .audibletrial .com slash LME, A -U -D -I -B -L -E -T -R -I -A -L dot com slash LME, it's for free!
If you don't like it, you can cancel no harm done.
If you want to find out about the book club, send us an email, the email address I want want you to use is Daily Dictation Members at gmail .com.
Sound cool? There you go.
You guys have a fantastic day, and together, let's master English.
