After sailing across the ocean for a significant period, the protagonist, referred to as the "Monkey," embarks on a multi-year odyssey through towns and diverse landscapes. Driven by a singular, profound ambition—to "live forever"—he seeks a legendary sage. His persistence leads him to a dense forest where a "woodcutter" provides the crucial information that a wise sage named "Subodhi" resides on the mountain. This encounter marks the transition from Monkey's aimless wandering to a purposeful pursuit of spiritual mastery.
Upon arriving at the temple, the narrative highlights Subodhi’s mystical foresight; he instructs his student to welcome the "new student" before Monkey even knocks. When they meet, Subodhi initially questions Monkey’s suitability due to his animal nature. Monkey’s rebuttal is grounded in his resilience and determination, noting that he "traveled almost 13 years" to arrive. The revelation of Monkey’s origin—that he was "born from a rock" and "created by heaven and earth"—intriguingly convinces Subodhi to accept him, bestowing upon him the name "Sun Wukong."
For "seven years," Sun Wukong integrates into the temple life, balancing "meditating," "listening to his teacher's lessons," and performing daily "chores." Despite his devotion, a conflict arises during a lesson when Wukong dances out of sheer joy. While this initially angers Subodhi, it leads to a deeper dialogue about the curriculum. Subodhi offers teachings on "telling the future" and "magic breathing exercises," yet Wukong rejects them with a singular focus: "Will it make me live forever?" When Subodhi confirms they will not, Wukong dismisses them, showcasing his uncompromising commitment to his ultimate goal.
When Subodhi responds to Wukong’s persistence by angrily knocking him "on the head three times" and storming out, the other students view Wukong as "rude." However, the narrative reveals a layer of hidden wisdom: Wukong understands that the master’s actions were a "secret message." This moment of realization serves as a pivotal point in his training, suggesting that true wisdom is often conveyed through unconventional and cryptic methods. The story concludes with Wukong discovering a hidden paradise behind a waterfall, symbolizing the beginning of a new, enlightened chapter in his journey.
