You're listening to the Beijing Hour, coming to you live from the Chinese capital.
On today's program, the Prime Minister of Samoa has brought a delegation to Beijing during her official visit.
Parts of northeast China are bracing for snow and a wave of cold weather taking hold over the next four days.
Israeli airstrikes have again targeted Beirut and the southern suburbs of the city.
In business, the second China International supply chain expo is set to get underway.
And today we bring you the second episode of a nine -part special report that delves into China's journey towards sustainable development.
Now checking the day's top stories.
Simone Prime Minister Fiami Naomi Matafa and her delegation are in Beijing for an official visit to China until Thursday.
The Chinese capital is the last stop of her eight -day visit.
The Prime Minister will meet with top Chinese leaders and share views on bilateral relations and important issues of mutual interest.
Her rival in Beijing comes after the trip to Guangdong Province.
On Monday, she visited Canton Tower and a hospital in Guangzhou, the provincial capital of the southern Chinese province.
She also visited the cities of Huizhou and Zhengmen on the weekend, who show up has more from the trip in Huizhou.
Aquaculture Corporation topsticks the more than Prime Minister's agenda during her visit to the southern Chinese city of Huizhou on Saturday.
She introduced her office of agriculture and fisheries to an industrial leader, Ayin Future Corporation.
Today we mainly introduced the situation modern marine ranches in Guangdong Province to the Simone delegation.
In particular, we provided a preliminary introduction to the fish farming project jointly led by 1C Marine Ranch and our company in Huizhou city.
As coastal fisheries are one of Samoa's pillar industries, the visiting delegation wants to learn more about large -scale industrial breeding here in Huizhou so they can develop and employ it back home.
We do have coastal fisheries, but we do not have these varieties of species of fish and we want to expand into other varieties, so we look for opportunities to have more other species of fish in our country to supply protein for our diets.
The Simone Prime Minister has shown a keen interest in traditional Chinese music and culture during visit to the Hua Lo Gong Sinyi High School, which has established a sister school relationship with the Simone College in 2015.
One member of the delegation recorded his exchange experience back in 2018.
I had the privilege of visiting with the former Prime Minister here in 2018 to see the exchange in programs.
It's a great opportunity for our students to come and exchange ideas, knowledge and skills on how to enhance their academic skills and also getting new knowledge.
2025 will mark the 50th anniversary since diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, which is expected to provide new opportunities for deepening bilateral ties and exchanges.
That was Xu Hua reporting.
During her time in Guangdong, the Simone Prime Minister also took part in a rescue exercise in Jiangmen, hosted by China for eight Pacific Island countries under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Xinzi Yuan has more from the exercise on Sunday.
It is the first time emergency rescue exercise for the Pacific Island country of its kind.
Around 300 people from emergency rescue forces representing China, Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region, Macau's Special Administrative Region and Pacific Island countries took part in an exercise on Sunday.
As the world sees the increasing challenge from climate change, countries see the need to cooperate in preparation for natural disasters.
Representatives from eight Pacific Island countries have a right in Jiangmen in southern China's Guangdong province for the 2024 Belt and Road emergency rescue exercise.
Twelve programs were prepared for scenarios facing earthquakes and disaster relief.
Such a coordination as well as upward road and T -shaped road rescue missions show can see China's and Pacific Island countries' cooperation capacity.
With the coordination and management of the United Nations in SIRAG, countries can contribute their expertise accordingly in the rescue.
It is awesome. One of the best that I have seen personally as a representative from the Cook Islands and my team.
And this is something that we will treasure and actually develop and put on.
Samoa's Prime Minister Fiame, who is on an official visit to China, led a Samoan delegation to the site.
A meeting was held among officials in the afternoon.
Deputy Minister of Emergency Management Shijiai said they hope the exercise provides more opportunities for Pacific Island countries to resist disaster threats and respond to challenges.
Sharing best practices and also technology and also a strategy that can start a large -scale drill to tail it into a small island like Nauru.
The beauty of this exercise is actually looking at the cooperation, the integration and the working together.
That togetherness is very important amongst all other countries in this whole exercise.
Communication has always been an issue but the fact of matter is that this is one of the best that I have seen personally within the region.
So China is actually leading a lot of the capacity building.
It's a positive aspect of the whole exercise.
It's awesome. With the China Pacific Island Country Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation set up in Genghman, officials hope the exchanges will improve the quality of China Pacific Emergency Management cooperation and enhance the safety and well -being of their respective peoples.
The Samoan Ambassador to China says China's advanced expertise in technology can be helpful for small island countries to combat climate change.
Luma Nuvay Albert Mariner made the remarks during an interview with Zhongshir.
Pacific Island countries are especially vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels.
How do you think China and Samoa should join hands in coping with the impact from climate change?
Climate change is definitely one of the most important priorities that Samoan government is implementing right now in terms of the Paris Agreement.
Samoa also is chair of the alliances of small island states.
So every time Samoa speaks at international forums, it also speaks every now and then on behalf of the alliance of small island states, which is about 40 plus small island countries.
This issue should be an issue of importance and priority to all the countries.
Now, Samoa acknowledges China's tremendous role in terms of its green energy pathway.
The technology that China has, the expertise that China has, would go a long way in addressing our small island countries' aspirations to meet our energy transition targets.
I'm very curious because Pacific Island nations are closer to what might call this existential threat than other nations.
Now, in your observation, what is lacking the most in our collective commitment as a global community to tackle climate change?
I think the key one is accessible, affordable financing.
China now has the technology.
China has the expertise.
I've traveled around some of the provinces.
I was in Ganzhu, and I saw amazing solar farms out there.
The missing part of the equation for small island developing states is, I think, affordable and accessible financing.
There's a whole heap of green climate finance, but, you know, you talk to any small island country, it's extremely difficult to access some of these finances.
So there is scope here now for China to work closely with small island developing states and come up with a specific product that we will be able to meet our clean energy transition targets.
How would you summarize the priorities of your job in this first two years, and what do you plan to do going forward from here?
Of course, like any ambassador's, it's to ensure that the relationship between China and Samoa continues to grow from strength to strength.
Every now and then, we have issues that we need to discuss and clarify.
But in terms of ongoing projects, there's very strong collaboration in our education sector, our health sector and also our sports sector.
So it's been a very fast 24 months, and I must say I'm learning new things every day.
I'm learning new things here in China.
Including the language.
Exactly. I'm still struggling, but I'm trying my best.
But every day I learn new things about China.
And I think I'm very privileged and honored to be in China at this point in time to be Samoa's ambassador here in Beijing.
And that was Samoan ambassador to China Lumanuwe Albert Mariner on China's efforts in tackling climate issues.
China and Luxembourg have agreed to further enhance mutual trust and deepen cooperation.
This comes after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Luxembourg counterpart Xavier Patel held talks in Beijing.
Patel's paying a visit to China until Friday.
Lu Cire has more. China and Luxembourg have achieved fruitful cooperation in fields such as air cargo, finance, and steel in the past 50 years.
Xavier Beto recalled the cooperation and said friendly relations between the two countries should be cherished against the backdrop of an ever complex world situation.
The Chinese Foreign Minister said cooperation brings people of the two countries closer.
Our cooperation is all round.
Last year, Luxembourg became the largest destination of Chinese investment in the EU.
The success of the cooperation is of great exemplary significance.
China said it's willing to work with Luxembourg to further enhance friendly mutual trust, deepen cooperation, and to promote a new development in China -Luxembourg relations.
That was Lu Cire reporting.
China and Singapore have recently launched joint army training, focusing on unmanned systems in modern military operations, particularly in urban counter -terrorism scenarios.
A standout feature of this year's drill was the deployment of a wide range of unmanned, intelligent equipment such as bomb disposal robots.
Chinese military officer named Chen Tao talked about the importance of the joint drill.
Each joint command operation by our commanders and every training session by our members is a process of mutual understanding, deeper connections, and enhanced integration.
Only through the continuous exchange of ideas and collaboration can we improve the joint counter -terrorism capabilities of both armies.
This year marks the sixth joint army training between the countries.
The exercise aims to deepen collaboration between the two armies and strengthen capabilities in joint counter -terrorism operations.
Coming up, parts of northeastern China are expecting blizzard conditions.
Subscribe on your favorite podcast platforms, and get ready to dive in.
13 minutes past the hour.
China is on alert for snow storms and a cold wave, with blizzards expected to hit parts of the country's northeast.
Snowstorms are the last parts of Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning.
Most parts of central and northern China will also see temperatures plunge over the next four days.
Guo Tian -chi has more.
The Central Materialogical Observatory issued a yellow warning for a cold wave.
Affected by the strong cold air, it is expected that from November 24 to November 28, the temperature in most parts of China will drop by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius.
In some areas of Inner Mongolia, the northeast China, the temperature will drop by 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, and in some local areas more than 16 degrees Celsius.
And the Central Materialogical Observatory also issued a yellow warning for heavy snow and immediately entered a level 4 emergency response state for it.
The core snowfall areas are northeast China, including the eastern Inner Mongolia and other places, which will experience heavy snow or snow storm.
The newly added snow depth in some areas will be 5 to 10 cm, and in Liaoning province, the snow depth can reach 20 to 25 cm.
In addition, the snowfall in Xinjiang, Qinghai, and Shanxi also has an impact on the local transportation.
After the cold wave passes around the 28th, the zero degree isotherm of the lowest temperature will reach the middle and lower reaches the Yansi River, and the lowest temperature in high altitude mountainous areas, such as the Dabia Mountain and Huangshan Mountain, will also be below zero degrees Celsius.
And in Nanjing and Shanghai, it may be the first time that the whole day temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius since the beginning of autumn.
And the Central Materialogical Observatory continue to issue a blue warning for strong winds.
There will be strong winds of force 5 to 6, with gusts of force 7 to 8 in some parts of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Ningxia, and other places.
The wind force in some sea areas in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea can reach force 9 with gusts of force 10.
As for the situation in Beijing, the Beijing Materialogical Observatory issued a blue warning for a cold wave.
It is expected that there will still be rain or sleet or some sled snow in the city area, and highest temperature during the day will be 7 degrees Celsius, and the lowest temperature at night will be minus 3 degrees Celsius.
Residents are advised to pay attention to keeping warm when going out and driving safely.

Three people have died as storm Burt hit Britain over the weekend, bringing strong winds, heavy rains, and flooding.
Many residents have expressed their frustration over measures put in place to try to prevent homes from flooding.
Storm Burt began pounding Britain and Ireland on Saturday night, interrupting transport links and leaving thousands of properties without power.
Authorities closed many roads and canceled several trains.
The U .S. West Coast is recovering from a powerful storm system that hit the area last week.
Stormy weather has barreled across the Pacific Northwest region and down to California.
The winds and rains have left thousands of people without power.
Poppy and Putin has more.
Washington hit by a bomb cyclone, meaning pressure dropped by 24 or more millibars in 24 hours or less.
This storm system more than doubled that criteria, making it one of the strongest storm systems on record in the state.
At least two people died, thousands lost power, many still without it.
As the storm system moved south toward Northern California, it brought rain and snow as it developed into an atmospheric river.
Think of it as like a river in the sky.
As we know, a river transports a lot of water, and so atmospheric rivers are essentially that, just up in the sky.
They're a relatively long, narrow region with significant water vapor that helps to transport moisture from the tropical areas into the mid -latitudes, which is where the United States is located.
Strong winds toppled trees and flooding caused road closures in some areas.
Some communities had to evacuate their homes.
I guess the concern is really, you know, starting this early, how long this goes on.
If this goes on all winter long, we could have serious problems throughout the state.
As the powerful storm system continues to move across the United States, forecasters expect the east coast to be impacted later this week.
And a warning Thanksgiving holiday travel could become snarled.
That was Poppy Imputink reporting.
Bolivian Authority say landslides affected around 40 homes in a hillside neighborhood of La Paz.
The slide followed the first rains after months of drought.
Six people were rescued, covered in mud, and there were no injuries.
La Paz Mayor Ivan Aria says the rains overflowed a river that washed away mud that had accumulated during illegal construction in the hills.
Today, the rain has not been intense, heavy.
What has happened is that there has been a washing away of land, and because there are movements of land above, they have blocked the vaults that allow water to flow during rains, and that cause the water to accumulate.
The product of the vaults is being blocked by these movements of soil.
We are rescuing people.
There are people who have been left on one side and on the other.
On Sunday, crews of municipal workers opened ditches and continued cleaning the mud, accumulated in houses and streets along almost a kilometer in a southwest neighborhood of the city.
The neighborhood was left without electricity, which workers were trying to restore.
La Paz is surrounded by hills with many neighborhoods on those slopes.
Countries around the world have shared mixed reactions to the climate finance deal that the UN Climate Conference, or COP 29, clinched in Azerbaijan.
Climate negotiators agreed to an annual finance target of US $300 billion to help poorer countries deal with the impacts of climate change by 2035.
The European Union hailed the deal as a new era of climate finance for poorer countries.
But UN Secretary -General António Guterres said that he'd hoped for a more ambitious outcome.
Many developing countries have expressed disappointment over the target.
Radhika Vajaj has more.
This brings us to the end of the conference.
I sincerely thank you for all your hard work over many long hours.
Applause for leadership, but equal acknowledgement for those unsatisfied with the final outcome of COP 29.
And I'm saying that we do not accept this.
You expect us to have ambitious indices.
The NCQG was supposed to enable us to have realistic finance goals.
$300 billion is unrealistic.
Let us tell ourselves the truth.
This is 3 am and we are going to clap our hands and say this is what we are going to do.
I don't think so. As we struggle to deal with climate change, the outcome proposed in the paper will further affect our ability to adapt to climate change, greatly impact our NDC ambitions and its implementation, and create further challenges to our resilience, and above all will severely impact growth.
India does not accept the goal proposal in its present form.
There has been frustration that developed countries shared a quantum figure only two days before the talks were to end, not leaving enough room for further discussions.
The new agreement provides US $300 billion annually by 2035, triple of the previous target which was seldom met and expired next year.
It includes a goal of raising US $1 .3 trillion in climate finance annually by 2035.
But this often means dollarised loans which emerging economies struggle to pay back.
That's another point of difference in these talks.
Bilateral skirmishes did dampen spirits at cop.
The Argentinean delegation pulled out after reportedly their president spoke with Donald Trump and France's top climate official decided not to come to Baku after offence was taken to comments made by Azerbaijan's president.
Observers have called out petrostates for blocking any strong language in the deal on the phasing out of fossil fuels.
That was Radhika Bajaj reporting.
The United Nations says it's confident that negotiators at talks in South Korea will reach an agreement on curbing plastic pollution.
UN Environment Program Executive Director Inger Anderson is attending the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting in Busan after taking part in the just -concluded COP29 climate conference.
People are expecting the negotiators to deliver this.
People want a way, pathway towards solutions.
They know, I'm sure, that this is not going to be solved in a day.
And they know that the text of a treaty once agreed is not going to fix the plastic on their beaches.
But they want a stake in the ground that allows us to move forward.
Let me just say that it took us 21 years, COP21, to get to agree that we have to be less than 2 degrees and aiming for 1 .5.
We don't have 21 years for this.
People want answers and they want it now.
So it's precisely within the hands of member states to get us there.
Previous talks this year in Ottawa ended without a push forward on capping plastic production.
The meeting in South Korea this week aims to secure an international treaty.
Outstanding issues include whether there should be a cap on plastic production, how to address single -use plastics and chemicals of concern in plastics.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese army says at least one soldier was killed and 18 others injured in an Israeli airstrike on an army center in Al -Almariyah.
The Israeli military said it regretted the incident and was investigating.
It said it was fighting against Hezbollah and not the Lebanese army.
Jonathan Megev has more from Tel Aviv.
So, the areas in the north, which experience daily and quite frequent sirens, the Haifa metropolitan area, therefore quite a violent day.
I think that not only Israel senses that a ceasefire is dealing.
It's about to take an uptick in actions.
Hezbollah feels that as well.
It seems as if both sides are trying to make gains now and make gains fast, since they both understand that maybe in a week or so there will be some kind of a ceasefire deal and whatever they will not achieve now might not be achieved at all.
That is why I think we're seeing some kind of an uptick in actions on both sides.
It's Jonathan Megev reporting.
Israeli forces have issued new evacuation orders for residents in an eastern suburb of Gaza City.
They've continued their strikes across the Gaza Strip.
The forces targeted several refugee camps and health care facilities on Sunday.
Rami al -Migari has more from Hanunis.
Hundreds of people, hundreds of Palestinian residents from the Shizia 'iya neighborhood have been forced to flee their homes because of an Israeli warning, a clear warning to all of them, to those living in that neighborhood to leave immediately, which because of what the Israeli army says in a statement,
the rocket fire that has been reported from those areas to nearby Israeli towns.
This is an Israeli norm, an Israeli habit.
Every time there is a fire, a rocket fire, the Israeli army orders the population to leave immediately.
This is related to the evacuation of those people.
Other Israeli army actions in the territory, including the killing of two Palestinians in the central Gaza Strip, a refugee camp of Magazi, when they hit, when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent that these people were taking shelter at in the camp to the west of the refugee camp.
In the Nusayrat refugee camp in which there have been intensive and frequent Israeli airstrikes and bombardments, there have been another killing of about three people have been reportedly killed in residential areas in the refugee camp.
That is actually the situation for the central Gaza Strip, two refugee camps.
Also, the Al -Bourhay refugee camp nearby has been hit by artillery fire and a number of people have been reportedly wounded.
To the north of the Gaza Strip, actually, there was a report about the wounding of the chief of the Kamal -Adwan Hospital, moderate wounded, but wounded, warned by chief of the chief of the Kamal -Adwan Hospital in the Jubal refugee camp after Israeli drones have been reportedly hit around the hospital
itself. This comes against the backdrop of United Nations reports that 6 % of the assistants supposed to enter the Gaza Strip are only entering these days.
That's the situation for the time being.
That was Ramy Almagari reporting.
It's 28 past the hour.
For Beijing's down to minus three on Monday evening.

A court in Seoul has cleared South Korean main opposition leader Lee Jae -myeon of charges that he forced a witness to commit perjury.
Lee thanked the Seoul Central District Court for bringing him justice.
He was accused of ordering a witness in a 2019 trial to give false testimony.
A court convicted Lee of violating the election law and handed him a one -year prison attempt.
The leader of the Democratic Party is still facing several ordered other trials including bribery and charges mostly tied to a US $1 billion property development scandal.
He has described the charges against him as political retaliation.
Lee narrowly lost to President Yoon Seok -hyaw in the 2022 election and is widely expected to seek to run again.
Any final prison sentence in an election law violation case would bar him from running in elections for five years.

The market participants are waiting for some figures later this week.
Timothy Pope has more.
Investors were assessing a couple of developments.
Firstly was the news that the outgoing Biden administration in the US is planning to bring in some more export restrictions on China as soon as this week.
And that move could affect 200 Chinese companies.
There's also, of course, uncertainty about what's going to replace that administration next year and how tough on China a second Trump White House is going to be.
The Shanghai Composite Index and the Shenzhen component were each down modestly about 0 .1 percent for the composite index.
There was a bit of a flaw under those losses, thanks largely to a jump for electric vehicle stocks.
And that came on the news that China and the EU might be getting close to solving the issues which have led to the imposition of tariffs on Chinese EV imports to Europe.
These tariffs, I think it's fair to say, they've been a bit controversial because of some vastly different opinions that have been held by EU member states.
Because by some estimates, these tariffs are also highly unlikely to actually achieve their stated goals.
But we had battery maker CATL up by 2 percent on that news and BYD was up 1 .6 percent.
This week, we're also waiting for plenty of important data that's due for release, of course, including industrial profits data for China, PMI figures.
And we're also going to get the latest earnings results for the e -commerce platform Meituan.
And that could give us a bit of an insight into the health of the retail sector.
That was Timothy Pope reporting.

A low altitude economy exhibitions concluded in eastern China.
The three day exhibition in Shaoxing showcased more than 500 aircraft, including drones, helicopters and more.
Highlights included smart navigation systems and cutting edge low altitude products.
Associate Professor Leo Hong with the Civil Aviation University of China says this sector's growth will help boost the development of the overall economy.
The development of the low altitude economy is combined with our aviation technology.
Driven by some market demand and policy support, it will help promote the development of the entire economy.
Around 200 companies took part in the event.
China's low altitude economy is soaring fueled by supportive policies and cutting edge technologies.
The low altitude economy refers to a spectrum of economic activities occurring up to 1 ,000 meters above ground level.
This includes civil and unmanned aerial vehicles, such as passenger transport, cargo delivery and low altitude flight operations.
The sector is projected to contribute up to US $700 billion to the country's economy by next year.
By 2027, China aims to establish over 10 leading enterprises along the general aviation industry chain, driving the modernization of aviation equipment and services.
Volkswagen's decision to cut production in Slovakia has raised alarm bells in the country's automotive sector, a cornerstone of the economy.
With Europe's auto industry under pressure, questions are mounting over whether this signals a deeper crisis for Slovakia.
Pablo Gutierrez has more.
Volkswagen's recent decision to close three factories in Germany and cut thousands of jobs has sent shockwaves throughout Europe's car industry in Slovakia where production shifts have been reduced.
The move has sparked widespread concern.
I think it will be the problem of all companies because we have a very big problem that the electric cars are not sold like everybody thought they will be.
Holicek says the current crisis facing automakers is unprecedented.
While low sales of electric vehicles are partly to blame, he says the real cause lies in the EU's 2035 deadline to end the sale of new CO2 -emitting cars and governments' failure to prepare for the switch.
The problem is the infrastructure.
That the countries are not prepared for the infrastructure.
In recent years, European automakers ramped up EV production anticipating consumer demand that has not fully materialized.
Experts say new vehicle registrations have dropped by close to three million cars per year.
Last year, Slovakia led central Europe in vehicle exports to China with 78 % of those exports being SUBs made right here at the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, Slovakia.
This is the country's largest company employing close to a quarter of a million workers.
For these workers, the stakes are high with the EU's recent imposition of tariffs on Chinese EVs and low domestic sale volumes, Slovakia faces huge challenges.
Meanwhile, Slovakia's auto workers are worried about further shift cuts and trade unions are calling for solutions.
In a statement to CGTN Europe, Volkswagen Slovakia said production at our vehicle plants depends on consumer demand and supply chain conditions with the goal of optimizing the economic performance of these locations.
For a country so deeply integrated into the auto industry, the next steps taken by Volkswagen and other manufacturers will be crucial, meaning an uncertain road ahead for Slovakia.

Cars of the future are powered by electric batteries and more capable than ever before.
But this year's concepts at the Los Angeles Auto Show reflect a new era for vehicle living.
90 % of these people are just blown away by what we represent here.
And so the car traveling is something that will continue to grow because everything is so expensive, traveling overseas, right?
For an investment of about $30 ,000, outdoors enthusiasts can go camping by wheels.
What our customers love most about pin drop travel trailers is they're just extremely convenient.

Coming up, our special report, Greener China, a journey to 2016.
You're listening to The Beijing Hour.
60 minutes of comprehensive news, your window on China and the world.
45 past the hour. It's time for our special report, Greener China, a journey to 2060.
It's a nine -part program dedicated to exploring China's efforts in carbon reduction.
In part two today, we focus on China's ecological restoration efforts over the past decades, which have transformed from addressing specific issues to embracing an overall approach rooted in ecological integrity.
However, there's still much progress to be made.
In late August, Yangon and his team traveled to the eco -fragile northwest to uncover stories of ecological restoration on the ground.
It used to be a mountain of mining dumps with no trees or grass inside.
Ecological conservation and restoration is required throughout the life cycle of all mining activities.
As China intensified its effort to build a green, low -carbon economy, it has asked entities to prioritize environmental protection alongside resource extraction.
Qingqiao was established in the early 1980s in Gansu Province with the development of Niku Man in the Gobi Desert in northwest China.
He retired in the 1990s from the mine owner, Tintran Group.
After retirement, I tried planting trees in my community.
Four years later, more retired colleagues joined me to plant trees.
And a forest came into being.
In early autumn, rounds of trees looked like thousands of green umbrellas light up along the city's western edge.
Back then, no one thought trees could grow on based rocks.
What is that you to plant trees here?
I wanted to shield residential areas from sandstorms.
Li's initiative nearly three decades ago was in accord with China's early efforts to restore degraded ecology.
In the late 1970s, China launched the Three North Shelter Built Forest Program to battle against sandstorms and soil erosion.
At the beginning of the new century, China's ecological restoration program started to expand beyond forest coverage.
Wang Yongsai, general manager of the Mineral Resources Department of Tintran Group told us that their restoration strategy entered a new stage in the early 2000s.
Ecological conservation and restoration is required throughout the life cycle of all mining activities, from geological survey to mine closure.
Mining many effects of soil, vegetation and local legal systems, generating dams that need to be carefully managed.
China's mining industry has developed fast since the countries opened up in the late 1970s, accompanied with incidents of illegal mining and environment degradation.
In 2009, the Chinese government called for greenmine construction, emphasizing scientific and orderly mining practices, controlling ecological disturbances, and making efficient use of resources.
Instead of simply piling up mine tailings like they did in the past, the mining company now handles them differently.
As we stood at the back -filling district of Tintran Group, we saw fresh mine dumps being transported in several coverages on a track.
They will be smashed in the crossing station and then backfilled the excavated pit with other mixtures of sand.
Tao Xianghui is a senior engineer of Tintran Group.
About half of the mine waste is recycled this way.
The rest is stacked and restored into the original appearance of the landscape, maintaining the original height and slope to prevent geological disasters like landslides.
Traveling through the mountainside, you can see stretches of mountains with small, rugged patches of bush sparsely scattered.
Some are terraced or in the process of being terraced.
Those are artificial mountains made of waste rock.
Those mountains are found in the Gobi Desert, where vegetation struggles to thrive.
While in areas that are suitable for planting, developers are asked to restore the landscape two years after the mining company's takeover for waste disposal.
Hui Hsu Hui is in charge of ecological restoration and Mei Hua Jin Koi Man in neighboring Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
80 % of the coal refuse is reclaimed and we grow local plant species like millet and clover, which can be distributed to local herders.
It's a good opportunity to foster positive relationships with the community.
The remaining refuse is repurposed as building materials and more.
In arid and seminary regions like the places we visited in Gansu Province, water, including wastewater, is used with care.
The main problem is water.
Right now we are mostly using wastewater that gets pumped up from underground.
We use it for irrigation after sedimentation.
The company is investing a lot to assist ecological recovery every year.
Jin Tran Group spent over 8 billion yen, or over 1 billion U .S.
dollars from 2015 to 2020 on environmental improvements.
They'd included waste management and wastewater and gas processing.
Jiawen Bing from the city's Ecological Environment Department told us that mine developers pay for the damage they make to the environment and are required to restore affected areas.
The local government provides found for the restoration of historical mining sites.
A research paper published on China Land and Official Magazine revealed that 300 ,000 hectares of historical mining sites have been restored since 2015.
In the meantime, the government has enhanced its supervision over restoration projects.
Nationwide ecological patrols have been carried out since 2016.
We conduct annual assessments and usually increase patrols to catch emerging issues before they escalate.
For those who fail to meet the restoration standard, their production will be suspended.
Beyond merely following regulations, science -based approaches are also explored in ecological restoration.
Hui Rui is a researcher at the Northwest Institute of Eco -environment and Resources under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
We select native, drought -resistant plants and test the different soil depths and water amounts for them to find the most efficient restoration methods.
From the 1970s until today, ecological restoration in China has evolved from the initial focus on dealing with specific ecological issues to a comprehensive approach with a focus on ecological integrity.
Represented respectively by the Three North Shelter Forest Program in the late 1970s and the Shen Shui Initiative in 2016 to restore ecosystems from mountains to coastal estuaries.
The most recent master plan for major national programs to protect and restore important ecosystems draws a blueprint spanning from 2021 to 2035.
Dividing China into seven crucial regions for ecological restoration, including the Qinghai Xizang Plateau, the Yellow River Watershed and the Yangtze River Watershed.
Zhou Jingfeng is Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, a China -based NGO dedicated to sustainable development.
Our ecological efforts initially focus on addressing environmental issues like smog and sandstorm, but we have never stopped our pursuit of better development.
Now, China's ecological restoration work is shifting towards promoting sustainable practices in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goals.
In recent decades, China has seen a significant increase in forest resources.
Additionally, the land affected by desertification has decreased and 1000 km of coastline has been restored.
However, despite the significant achievements, challenges remain.
Nature -based solutions are needed in ecological restoration, but we're not doing enough in practice.
Additionally, our efforts often focus on large -scale graining projects and the success is measured more by investment scale rather than by the effectiveness of the ecological restoration itself.
Meanwhile, historical deficits and simplistic goals in some ecological projects have also been emphasized by China's most recent restoration instruction, the Master Plan for major national programs to protect and restore important ecosystems.
The Master Plan also points out that water resources remain a critical issue in restoration work.
China is a developing country with a large population.
Our development inevitably brings challenges to ecology.
For the challenges the country faces in its ecological restoration effort, tune in to the next episode of our program, Ecological Restoration, A Struggling Recovery.
