I think it's more about the context than how formal the language should be."

If you get on quite well with your colleagues and you're just having a chat about the weekend, then of course you can speak using language you wouldn't use in a meeting with your boss."

相反,informal language(非正式语言)则充满了contractions(缩略语)、colloquialisms(口语化表达)和shortenings(简化词),这些是我们日常与亲友相处时的自然流露。 Oh, I have some spare capacity for my dinner party tonight."

最重要的策略是"recognise it and try and fit in with everyone else",即观察并融入周围人的沟通习惯。

Good morning, nice to meet you"这样的formal greeting(正式问候)是稳妥之举。 Hey, how are you doing?"

Could I request?"、"Would it be possible?"或"Do you have spare capacity?" 相对而言,非正式的请求则更加随意,如"Could I borrow you?"或"Do you have a minute?",这些表达更适合关系熟络的同事之间。

We would ask that you come into the office on Tuesdays";也可以是直接强硬的,类似路标般的命令:"Attendance of the office on Tuesdays is mandatory." What you want to do is..."

📖 Transcript

How formal should we be at work?
I think it's more about the context than how formal the language should be.
I think with colleagues that you spend a lot of time with, you have a bit more freedom to be informal because it takes a lot of effort to be formal with people you see all the time.
If you get on quite well with your colleagues and you're just having a chat about the weekend, then of course you can speak using language you wouldn't use in a meeting with your boss.
Today, we're talking about formal and informal workplace language.
So, Phil, we've just been hearing from some of our BBC Learning English colleagues about using formal language at work.
