Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio.
Good morning.
This is Laura.
Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast.
Today's tip is to plan a fun and easy get together for Sunday afternoon or evening.
Sundays don't have to be scary.
With something at the end of your weekend to enjoy, you can make the most of your time off, instead of stressing about the work week ahead.
I hear from a lot of people about a Sunday reset.
Prep for the week involving cleaning, life maintenance, cooking, and so forth.
If a Sunday reset is working for you in your life, well, that's fine.
But if your weekends feel too short, or if your Sundays feel too demanding, or if you tend to spend the last day of the weekend feeling stressed about the week ahead...
Try ending Sunday with people you care about rather than with your to-do list.
You will reset in an entirely different way for the week ahead.
There are a lot of simple ways to do some version of a Sunday gathering.
It could be a low-key dinner party.
Feel free to just buy something like a big pan of chicken parm from the Italian restaurant that does grab-and-go family meals.
You could order pizza or sushi.
Or you could make a pot of chili with fun toppings.
No need to spend all day in the kitchen.
If you don't want to be in charge of food at all, you could host a potluck.
If the host provides a theme like comfort food or Mediterranean, then whatever people bring will more or less match.
And if they don't match, that's fine too.
I'm sure it will all taste great.
You don't even have to host others to have a gathering of sorts.
Your family is a group.
Make your Sunday dinner intentional and ritualistic in some way.
Maybe your family goes out to your favorite pizza parlor every Sunday night.
Or maybe you have Sunday sandwiches as a very easy but crowd-pleasing meal.
Of course, a Sunday evening get-together doesn't have to be a full meal.
You could have friends gather on your porch for afternoon lemonade or for a glass of wine after your kids go to bed.
You and a few movie-loving friends could hit a 5 p.m. show every Sunday night.
Or before dinner, you could meet up at a neighborhood playground with a few other families with kids the same age as yours.
Do this a few weeks in a row, and it starts to be a tradition.
I think the commonality among all these Sunday gatherings is that they are warm, comfortable and pleasantly predictable.
Nobody has to do much preparation.
Not a lot is asked of you at the gathering either.
And you can count on getting to connect with people you care about and feel comfortable with.
That's not bad for a Sunday, which really should be about comfort.
Planning something for the end of the weekend takes you away from your to-do list and any worries about Monday.
Instead of spending your Sunday afternoon thinking about Monday, you'll spend it anticipating your fun to come.
Sure, you've got a meeting Monday morning.
But before that, you've got a movie or wine on the porch.
And honestly, for a lot of things people do as part of their Sunday resets, your weekday self will be able to handle it.
I'm not saying you shouldn't know that there is a meeting coming up, but hopefully your Friday self already saw that.
And built-in time Friday or Monday morning for prep.
Your Monday evening self will be able to cook dinner by putting stuff on a sheet pan.
You truly do not need to cook for the entire week.
Instead, spending relaxed time with people you enjoy will make you feel more positive for the week ahead.
Something I am not sure all that meal prep and house cleaning actually does.
In the meantime, this is Laura.
