Hello everybody, Coach Shane here.
How you doing?
E-Cubed number 439.
This is a really good expression.
It's a question, but it has a very deep meaning.

Let's go back in time.
Today's expression is.
What is he to you?
We could also say This is a very common expression and what it means is What does that or that person, what type of relationship do you have with that person or that thing?
What is he to you?
What is the relationship between you and him?
Is he your boss?
Is he your friend?
Is he your brother?
What?
What is the relationship?
Who?
Who is he to you?
Who is he in your world of relationships?
Yes, we can say what and we can say who.
It has the same meaning.
OK, so, for example, let's say I'm talking about a famous American whose name is Tony Robbins.
And some people just love Tony Robbins.
But you, you hate Tony Robbins.
So I'm saying, oh, Tony Robbins, he's a great guy.
I really like his books.
I really like his talks.
I think he's wonderful.
And you say, Tony, Tony's stupid.
Oh, man.
In this situation, I'm surprised that you don't like Tony because I think he's great.
So I would ask you, what is he to you?
What's your relationship with Tony?
How do you understand?
How do you relate to Tony?
Do you have some bad experience with Tony?
Did he cheat you?
Did he lie to you?
Do you know him personally?
What is the relationship?
Why do you have so much emotion when it comes to talking about Tony?
Where is all this anger coming from?
And it's not just anger.
It could be love.
So I'm talking about Tony, Tony, Tony, Tony, Tony.
You could say, what is he to you?
Is he your boyfriend?
No, he's my coach.
He's my life coach.
He's not my boyfriend.
What is he to you?
What is his relationship to you?
Do you love him?
What's going on?
Why do you like him so much?
Because he's my coach.
He's my mentor.
Do you understand?
It's a great expression and it's actually very common.
What is he to you?
Who is he to you?
Let's check out a dialogue.
Ugh, I really hate John.
Eh, he's not that bad.
What?
What is he to you?
Well, actually, he's my sister's boyfriend.
Oh boy, be careful, yeah.
If you hate somebody, you have to be careful, because...
Somebody you know might like that person.
And if you hate somebody and your friend likes the same person, well, then it's a conflict.
Hate is a dangerous word.
Sometimes you never want to use it.
But to be honest, me, Coach Shane, do you think I ever used the word hate?
Can you imagine Coach Shane using the word hate?
I do.
Yeah, absolutely.
I use it when I talk about certain foods.
Some foods I just hate.
I just hate.
Oh, I use it when I talk about insects, cockroaches.
I hate cockroaches.
Speaking of cockroaches, I also use it when I talk about politicians.
Yeah, many politicians.
Not all politicians.
Lots of business people too.
I hate them.
Come on.
They're greedy, evil, not good people.
And even some English teachers I hate.
They don't do anything.
They talk, talk, talk, talk, talk and don't do anything.
No, I'm joking.
I love every English teacher in the world, especially my English teachers in elementary school and middle school.
Oh, I love those teachers.
That's not true.
What about you?
What is he to you?
Is there somebody you really, really like?
Or perhaps you really, really hate?
And you're talking about that person.
But the person that you're talking to, they don't really know the relationship.
They might ask you, what is he to you?
Who is he to you?
What is she to you?
Who is she to you?
Or you're talking about some place.
Oh, Chicago.
I just love Chicago.
Chicago, Chicago, Chicago.
What is Chicago to you?
Is that your hometown?
Is that where you fell in love?
What is Chicago to you?
Oh, it's just the city of my dreams.
I dream about Chicago.
Yeah.
It's a great expression.
Check out the dialogue two more times.
Oh, I really hate John.
He's not that bad.
What?
What is he to you?
Well, actually, he's my sister's boyfriend.
Ugh, I really hate John.
Eh, he's not that bad.
What?
What is he to you?
Well, actually, he's my sister's boyfriend.
Thanks so much for listening.
