传统的表达方式如 "We were able to meet our objectives" 或 "We could finalize the report" 虽然语法正确,但略显平淡。

We were able to convince the customer."
We managed to convince the customer to agree to the price."
  • 负面场景:与其说 "We couldn't come to an agreement",不如说 "We didn't manage to come to an agreement",后者在商务语境中更显专业。

Could" vs. "Manage to"

When I was younger, I could play the guitar"(一般能力)是正确的;但如果说 "Last month, we could reach the target"(具体事件),则是不自然的。对于过去具体发生的成功事件,必须使用 "was/were able to""managed to"。Anna 强调,虽然母语者能听懂 "we could reach our objectives",但这不符合native speaker的自然表达习惯,无法展现高级商务英语的水准。

此外,需区分 "manage to do something"(设法做成某事)与 "manage something"(管理某事/某人)。

  • "Fortunately, we've managed to meet all our objectives this year."
  • "We didn't manage to get any direct feedback from them."
  • "How do you manage to make sure you're not in touch with me?"
